My usual 30-06 with 180's has been seeming like overkill this hunting season, so I'm going to go with a 280 and 160 Partubonds, which are the new tipped, bonded, boattail Partitions that Nosler is now selling in my imagination.

If I can't kill it with my model 71 throwing 200 grain Hornadys it don't need killin'. P

This is a different answer than I'd have given a few years ago, but right now I'd go with Shodd's choice, 150 Partitions in the .270 Winchester. Did the work you did for your recent .270 article have anything to do with your choice? I'd have to go with my pre-64 .270, probably with 160 gr. Partitions. Lighter ones would be fine and maybe shoot a little flatter, but those 160s, seated out for my rifle just look like the business. I've had that rifle for over 30 years now and it's never given me a moment's trouble. Everybody oughta have at least one.
What fresh Hell is this?

No, my choice was one reason for doing the .270 article.

If I had to, I'd go with my 30-06, 180gr NPT and H4350 and I'd get along pretty well for all of the hunting I'll do for the rest of my life (unless I win the lottery).

Lots of people do this anyway and think nothing of it. They mostly own .308's. Really? That sounds like you're describing the "not very enthusiastic" hunter / shooter. If so, around here, those folks shoot .243, .270, 7mm Rem Mag, '06, or .300 Win Mag. Of course, so do a lot of pretty dedicated hunters and shooters who own many other things, too, but those are the common things in the hands of the "one gun wonders." .308 just isn't seen here very often and when it is, usually it's a tactical rifle, not a sporter, and the people who play that game tend to own a bunch of rifles. Tom Well , yes. Quite the opposite, they are all dedicated hunters. They are just not gun nuts. Here, probably a quarter of the hunting rifles overall are .308's. (Followed by 7mm08 and .270's.) Sensible and deadly describes the 308 Win; a rimless 303 British. The other calibres are fluff. Playtoys. Much like your likeable, but slow cousin. I wonder, to satisfy the math, could one opt for half a calibre, but two bullets?

One Rifle and One bullet? It would probably be my HVA lightweight 308 w/2x7 Leupold and 165's. As I shoot gophers to Moose I would use cast 165's at 1300 fps for goph's and book max loads of I-4064 w/165gr partitions on everything else. Or I would choose my HVA FN Lg. ring 7x57 and 160's as above. Muddy

7x57 and 175gr Hornady Spire Points. Rifle would be my FN Mauser. Would hate to give up my other 7x57s though.

Pre 64 Mod 70 FWT in .308 with the 165 partition over RL 15. My first deer rifle, and I still haven't found anything measurably better for what I do with it. I've even used 125 gr. Ballistic tips for chucks, but haven't done that in years.

Simple and deadly.

260, 140 NAB.
Seen it do things it can't, with my own eyes. Save for one incident of pure curiosity involving 225 NABs, all the rifle hunting we've done, from antelope to coues to elk, has been done with one 260 or another for quite some time now anyway. Though the 260 killing has involved many flavors of 140s and a few 120s.

Pretty easy.30-06, 180 Partition.done Right on. In fact I have hunted with several people who did just that. They owned one rifle and shot everything with it using H-4350 and the 180 grain Partition.

7X57 with the 140 grain Nosler Partition. Works for me. Same but with a 160 Partition.

If it is the 7x57, it is the 140 gr AB.
