Hi, Just wondering what iphone apps you all could suggest to use for GPS and other hunting purposes? Main concerns were marking stand locations and being able to use maps off-line reliably. I've seen the Trimble apps (used to be Cabelas) and just started playing around with HuntStand Lite. Doesn't have to be a hunting-specific app, just for GPS and map use. Thanks, Jed

I would look at the version from Hunting Maps GPS. They were offering a year subscription free to RMEF members.

I recently purchased iHikeGPS, which cost $8. It works offline, provided you have downloaded you maps previously. It gives you free access to USGS and Forest Service maps.
I'm still playing with it, but it's very simple and I was able to set a waypoint for my new treestand and then email it to my iPad. No satellite photos or access to other map formats as far as I can tell, but it's simple and works.
I have a couple other apps that do more, but if you are off the network, you're SOL.
What fresh Hell is this?

Motion X works for me. All kinds of maps, including roads, terrain in Bing, Google and motion X. satellite imagery as well.

+1 on Motion X; also Gaia is very good.
I wish they were as good for droid phones.

I used Trimble the other day for the third time as a GPS. This time I used it to mark last blood on an archery shot. In the past, I used it to mark some wild asparagus.
Had a great signal, but my waypoints kept switching by about 15 - 20 yards. Was not very helpful in finding the last blood but was very helpful in getting me turned around in the dark.
Going to try a different one.

That 15-20yd error could be due to the orientation of the satellites at the time. That can make a huge difference in waypoint location. GPS can be accurate, but I would NOT count on anything handheld having an error measured in feet all the time.

Trimble is great, but there is a small bug.
When you make a waypoint, it doesn't always get created on your exact location for some reason. My iPhone 4, it was terrible. On my new 6, the god is dead on, I just have to pay attention and sometimes move my waypoint to my actual location.
Pain in the butt, but its a better app (IMO) than Gaia for hunters. If you buy the app you can download all the offline tiles you want, and they have a property owner map available for most states for $100.

I use my GPS to retrace my steps when I lose something while stalking before dawn.
It does not work for losing the GPS, or three of them anyway.
Now my 4th GPS and my range finder are tethered with lanyards to my binocular harness. I feel like a puppet when I put that stuff on.
