I've just I.D.'d the front sight on my 1899 as a marbles duplex no. 5. Any pic's i've seen are on ramps but mine is dovetailed into the barrel (.303 cal/311 bore). wondering if it's factory or bubba'd on a 1912 gun?

Just a heads-up so you don't make a mistake reloading .311 jacketed bullets in your Savage, but your rifle is .308 not .311, as all .303 Savages are.

303 British was/is .311.

Edit: 303 Savage and 303 British are not the same animal.

Marble's duplex front sight "first appears in Marble's 1913 catalog" according to information their website. I don't know enough about Savages to know if that would be factory or not. Do you have a way of posting a picture? I do know the sight itself is very hard to find if it has both original beads.

Brad, sorry i can't post pictures, but mine is missing the flip down white bead (likely the part usually missing).Interestingly enough my gun dates to 1912, but that doesn't mean it wasn't assembled in 1913 or later, it is a savage after all. Thanks for the info, Rodney

I have one of those sights on a 38-55 saddle ring carbine made in 1905 ,its dovetailed in.Im sure the sight fit the original savage dovetail.

The 99G Deluxe that my Dad passed down to me had that front sight when I was a whee lad but somehow by the time it got to me it had been replaced by a gold bead. Of course, by the time it came to me it was also D&Ted for Weaver mounts and a Weaver K2.5 had been mounted. I'll have to dig way back in the safe to see if that gold bead sight has any maker's marks.
