Ok decided on building up my Ruger M77II in 6.5x55. Mostly shots 400 yds & under but can reach out to 500. What scope would you put on it?

I have a few vx2 3-9x40's and like them no complaints at all. If willing to spend a little more the vx3 3.5-10x40's are my favorites that are on the majority of my others

FX3 6x42 unless you have to have more magnification. Then VX3 3.5-10.

The 3.5-10X40 VX3 would be my other choice. Either one is good to go....

I'd prefer the VX3 in 4.5-14, but the others mentioned will work fine.

scope is going to depend a lot on personal preference. Some people like variables, some don't, some like lots of magnification, some don't. You's probably use the same scope on a 6.5X55 under those circumstances that you would on a 7/08, a 270, a 257 or any other cartridge in that general class.

Either a 6x42, 6x36, or 3.5-10x40. I personally really like both the 6x42 and 6x36, but if you hate a fixed scope the 3.5-10x40 is also a fine choice.
The 6x42 has some nice features the 6x36 doesn't, like finger clicks. The 6x36 is compatible with Leupold Alumina covers, and Leupold doesn't make them for the 6x42 any more.
I borrowed my grandpa's rifle to hunt one year while mine was being worked on. He had passed away, so wasn't using it. He had a Leupold fixed 4x on the rifle, and I haven't hunted with a variable scope since. I only have one variable scope left, and one day I'll replace it with a fixed scope also.

My T3 SS Synthetic Swede that I bought used came with a Redfield Revolution in 3-9X40. It was a package deal, and I thought I might be replacing the scope if it didn't make grade. I LOVE the thing. I have a couple Leupolds, a couple Bushnells, a Mueller, A Burris or two. That Revolution cooks right along side the others.
I won't be taking it off any time soon. It tracks real well, and maintains zero well, too. I was surprised.

I agree with the VX3 3.5-10x40.
That is what I have on my Swede.

Doug has Minox ZA3 3-9x40's on sale for like $130. But you couldn't go wrong with a VX-1, 2 or 3 from Leupold.

It doesn't really matter the platform as much as the application. My Swede is wearing a 3.5-15 Nightforce, but I stretch it to 1000.

VX3 2.5-8x36 rides on top of my Swede but a fixed 6x would do just as well.

Bushnell Elite 3-9 because the Rainguard coating makes sense on a hunting rifle. Leupold 6X or 3-9 if you're not a fan of Bushnell.
