Sent a Cashiers Check for a Savage 99E came home an hour later after check is in the mail. And seller reports rifle and one other has been stolen while looking for packing boxes to ship. Seller assures me that my check will be returned. Would feel better if I had a way to verify story such as a police report # or such seller is out of town till Sunday. Any ideas.

I would contact the issuing bank, explain the situation and try to stop payment. It may cost a few bucks, but less than the cost of the gun.

I did that and there is no way I can stop payment on a cashiers check.

kk Alaska, I saw that gun for sale here. Noticed the member did not have many posts which made me leary. GOOD LUCK!

And, you should be able to stop the cashiers check, but it costs quite a bit, I think you have to get an indemnity bond from the bank.

then called local PD to see if there is a police report to verify
story. I believe he is out of town till Sunday and will hope for
the best. Kurt

I'd also go visit the Post Office. Since this transaction is taking place through the U.S. Mail, mail fraud statutes apply, I would think.

Hope it works out...that would suck big time.

Any resolution yet? When (IF) you do receive the 99E I'd like to take a look at it. I'll show you my 99F in .35-.284.

Well got money order back. Will take a while to get my money put back in to my account. Had seller write void
on check, so they have to verify to see if all is well. Firefly should be added to the good guy list.

If I were Firefly, I'd be just a little pissed off! That right off, your going to start calling police to possibly start an investigation after he immediately notified you of what happened. Seems that in a week's time you had the check back in hand just as he said you would. Where was the problem?

What is wrong with using the police to check on a person to see if they are legitimate? Whats wrong with checking to see of a police report has been filed if a theft has been reported?

I would go slow to challenge a person for "starting an investigation" when that is not what happened, not what said, and not what was reported. Unless a person is truly paranoid, or has a reason to be paranoid, there is no harm, no foul, and this time quick thinking could have resulted in apprehension if something WAS amiss, which it wasnt.

The few times police can be involved early in something, if there were something wrong, should be refreshing. compared to a history of stale, 90-days-later problems with internet transaction.

Glad it all worked out for everyone except the poor guy had his stuff ripped.

IMO, KK did it just right. He presented the problem and asked for help. He didnt insult anybody or jump to conclusions. I think Fireflies understands and would have excepted nothing less. Im sorry Firefly lost a rifle, but his reputation has been enhanced 100%. I dont think anyone would hesitate buying something from him.

The way some of you guy's think, completely baffles me. So I'll put it another way. If it was me instead of Fireflies then I'd be one pissed off mother [bleep]. Fireflies apparently did everything appropriate and nothing to deserve police involvement in less than 6 day's.

The ways some of you think newcomers are to be suspected of scamming until proven respectful and trustworthy is ridiculous!

Now since I don't know all the details I'll leave it at that!

I'm with Jameister and Kurt on this one. I don't think Kurt did a thing wrong to call PD to see if a theft report had been filed. He had a material interest, having purchased the item, in essence.

Plus, I know Kurt, and I don't believe he would jump to conclusions or take action thoughtlessly. Were it me in the seller's position, I would have FAXed the buyer a copy of the police report and the name/phone number of the investigating officer, just to make sure they knew I wasn't trying to pull something on them. And it would not bother me in the slightest if they called the State Troopers to see what was going on. When you sell something to someone, you have a continuing responsibility to them until the product is delivered, and they have a right to be fully informed of circumstances until that point.

If you would be angry with me for following up to my satisfaction at any stage of the transaction, you may count on not doing business with me.

I will be happy to do business with Kurt at any time <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/cool.gif" alt="" />.

Count me in that camp also Dennis. I had a dealing with Kurt once and his computer had problems so he had no e-mail or way for PMs. He was concerned enough that I might want to get in touch with him that he called another member and asked them to e-mail me about his situation and that he had received payment and had shipped the item. I really think that shows how much he values keeping in touch.

The person who he had e-mail me said that Kurt would cheat himself before he would cheat someone else. Although I have never met him in person, I am quite positive this would be the case after dealing with him. I am also sure he didn't do anything he wouldn't have expected someone to do to him if the situation was reversed. The fact he gave the seller a vote of confidence was the main thing of importance I believe.
