Sally Island is actually in Northeast Arm of Uganik Bay, not East Arm. The bear I killed this spring with IdahoPro was on the beach almost straight across from the corner of Sally and a short chip shot away. It is also where OlBlue's S-I-L and a friend were bluff-charged by a sow with a couple cubs some years back. We saw 66 bears in 11 days so it is too bad they did not take out the other problem cub... http://www.ktuu.com/news/news/hunter-kills-2-brown-bears-after-man-mauled-near-kodiak/29548374Hunter kills 2 brown bears after man mauled near Kodiak Chris Klint Chris Klint, Senior Digital Producer, cklint ktuu.com POSTED: 10:55 AM AKST Nov 05, 2014 Hunter kills 2 brown bears after man mauled near Kodiak Courtesy USCG ANCHORAGE - A hunter defending a man seriously injured in a bear mauling killed two bears near Kodiak, according to Alaska State Troopers. In an AST dispatch issued Tuesday night, troopers say the attack on 68-year-old Sitka resident Michael Snowden was reported by the U.S. Coast Guard at about 12:30 p.m. Tuesday. Coast Guardsmen had responded to the scene on Sally Island -- about 30 miles west of Kodiak, in the east arm of Uganik Bay. (Snowden) had been attacked by a brown bear while deer hunting, troopers wrote. His hunting partner, Jeff Ostrin age 38, of Camas, Wash., dispatched the bear during the attack. While waiting for help another bear appeared and Ostrin dispatched that bear also. A Coast Guard MH-60 Jayhawk helicopter crew flew to the site and medevaced Snowden, who was taken to Providence Kodiak Island Medical Center for treatment of injuries to his leg. Alaska Wildlife Troopers subsequently determined that Snowden and Ostrin had come across a family of bears in the incident. Investigation by AWT revealed that it was a sow with two large cubs that attacked Snowden, troopers wrote. Sounds like Mr. Ostrin is a good man to have around in a tight spot...and a speedy full recovery to Mr. Snowden.

Yes, he would seem to be Mr Steady!
Not like the back-up chosen by the cook in McCarthy some years back. He wanted to kill a brown bear with a stick and string and got a coworker to go with him.
He got in close to the bear and skewered it. For some reason the bear did not like the idea and started nibbling on the cook.
The cook's back-up did exactly what his title says and backed up... all the way to the road and beat feet home, never telling anyone what happened.
A couple days later a very beat-up cook crawled out of the brush at the roadside and managed to get a ride to the hospital and survived.
Not sure how his back-up is sleeping nights...

Are you going back to Uganik? Actually I think I remember you going to Terror Bay/Uganik Island, right?

Another poster here has that tag for the coming spring...
Just talked to a bear guy down in Kodiak and the individuals involved were carrying 30-06s and a 454Casull...

Went elk and deer hunting on Afognak last month. Came face to face with a sow with big cubs. You definitely have to have your head on a swivel and stay close to your partners. You just can't hunt those islands like other places. What always surprises me about those big bears was just how quiet they can be!

Not sure how his back-up is sleeping nights... That story reminded me of the story of Hugh Glass, John Fitzgerald, and Jim Bridger, after Hugh Glass was mauled horribly by a Grizzly. Enjoyed your pictures and narrative. L.W

Not sure if or how anything was dealt with after the mauling and discovery... but sleeping nights should be a scary proposition for him.
