Here are some pictures of a bull that I killed in Unit 12 in New Mexico. This was on an unlimited hunt north of Quemado.
This was the ONLY elk that we saw. My dad, my eight year old, and I were walking the top of a timbered ridge cow calling when this bull answered. By the time I sat down and chambered a round,he was on top of us. I shot him at about 35 yards. He had seven points on one side, and six on the other.

As it always goes, we didn't have a camera with us when I shot him, therefore I have no pictures of him in the field. (No, I didn't just shoot him in my bedroom).

For reference on beam and tine length, I'm 6'3" inches tall.
(I don't know why the pictures look so blurry).

Here is a side view showing the 24" drop tine.
This is my first time posting pictures. Hope that it worked!!

Well, if you are only going to see one you did great. LOL

Very nice elk. I'll bet your pulse rate was up a bit.

I shot him the first weekend of October, 2001. He was taken out of one of the "unlimited" permit areas in New Mexico. I shot him twice through the chest with a 300 grain Swift A-frame out of a .375 Ultra Mag. (Once broadsided, and once when he took off after the shot). He piled up about 100 yards away.

It amazed me how far the bull was able to go. The blood trail was simply unbelievable. Elk are definitely one tough animal. The best part of the hunt was watching my son when the bull bugled at us. I have never seen a child's eyes get so big.

This hunt cemented a desire in my son to pursue Dad's hobby.
He drew a cow elk and a doe antelope hunt. (Going on the antelope this weekend). I set the boy up with a Weatherby Carbine 7mm-.08 and he has become absolutely deadly with it.
Last year in Texas, he took 3 whitetails, a fallow doe, and a catelina goat. I can't wait to turn him loose on the New Mexico animals. The only downside to this all is now Dad doesn't hardly schedule a hunt without including the son. (Not much of a downside).

Spike, my wife is going to kill me, but we should probably talk about a particular NM archery hunt.

VERY NICE. I think I need to see if I can get invited to the Taos Pueblo one more time.

2A. Are you a NM resident? I looked into going into close to that area, in the NW Corner of the Gila. It was a High Demand or Quality area and the non resident tags were about $850, but it might have been a unit west or east of ther 15 I believe.

I have a few friends who hunt that area all the time that are residents and they have taken some spetacular bulls out of there.

We were going to hunt it in 03 , but the price is a little high for me. Muley and Spike---You best start saving your pennies.

Saddlesore,

Yes, I am a NM resident. The areas that you are talking about are across the highway to the south of the area that I was hunting. The Western part of the state, especially those areas bordering Arizona, produce some monster bulls each year.

The area that I hunted has gone to a draw unit, but it is almost a guaranteed draw. And, since it is a High Demand/Quality unit the tags are very reasonable.

The only other elk that I saw come out of that area when we were hunting was actually larger than the bull that I took.
That guy's bull grossed around 380.

Congratulations! If you are going to see only one, you picked a good'un. My wall yearns for one.
