I've noticed a change in things (I think) since my early days. Are y'all ready for this? Are you sure?
I went to Sam's Sunday and in my shopping I picked up a cluster of half green bananas. Today is Wednesday and they are turning brown and the skins are getting shriveled. I don't remember bananas having such a short life. Did I just live through that earth shaking event or are the "Dark Forces" messing with us again?
After a banana starts getting brown spots I ain't eatin' it. It's trash bag time.
I'm worried that this is just another way "they" are sneaking past our defenses. I hope Gus reads this and can't sleep for weeks because of it. Or make banana ( cookie) pudding. With instant pudding of course, not cooked.

Ain't nothin' wrong with bananas with spots on them. If they go past that, make banana bread. Don't like banana bread. I eat them with my cereal.

I believe that it's when they are failing two subjects or have committed a serious violation of the conduct code.
Not a real member - just an ordinary guy who appreciates being able to hang around and say something once in awhile.

Heck Mickey I got a bunch that never ripened even after 3 weeks! Keith, these went from half green to overripe in 3 days! I'm telling y'all, there are sinister forces at work here. You can't say I didn't warn you.

I toss them off of my back deck and the deer gobble them up peel and all within an hour. They seem to like rotten citrus as well.
Bounce a rock off one of our deer and it will run over to see if it's an edible morsel. Urban deer are a real pain.

During the Depression, a couple of friends of ours hitch-hiked to Florida to look for jobs.
As they approached Pensacola, road-side banana stands reminded 'em that they hadn't had anything to eat in 2�3 days.
At that time, Pensacola was a port of import for bananas. Importers sold the too-nearly-ripe bananas to locals who then sold 'em at road-side stands along the highway leading into Pensacola.
Our friends had 25� between 'em and decided to blow it all on bananas.
"Gimme a quarter's worth."
The proprietor cut down a stalk of bananas for him.
"We just want a quarter's worth."
"That's a quarter's worth."
Friend told us later that for a nickel, the two of 'em had all the bananas that they could eat.

My mother raised her four younger brothers, the youngest of whom was an image of Perry Como. After the conquest of Tarawa, he and another Marine hauled-in a trailer load of bananas � wrote her "Wish you were here to make us some of your banana pudding." She did indeed make outstanding banana pudding. And I indeed did envy those Marines � wished that she and I were both there to help lighten that trailer load of bananas.

I just try and eat the really bruised parts fast.
but love me some overripe bananas once a year. Momma takes those mixes em up with yellow cake, frosts it with chocolate icing and I get my b'day cake.
though these days I refrain from eating my b'day cake in my b'day suit.

I can't stand to eat them UNTIL they start getting a few spots on them. Then they call to me, along with the loaf of white bread, and the jar of Peter Pan.......... Also great, with Nutella................

You can't say I didn't warn you. Fairly typical these days.. They're picked green, then before they're sent to the stores they reside for a time in a gas (ethylene? I can't remember the name) which is used to enhance ripening.. My wife has about a one-day window to eat a banana - which is why I buy no more than 3 at any one time - otherwise the 4th gets too ripe for her and she won't touch it.. I don't mind 'em at that point, but not much further.. She does make the best banana bread I've ever had though..

Each week day lately, the Quemado Senior Center has brought me a banana in my breakfast. Each banana has been just right � just ripe. I call 'em "Mickey." Fitting nickname, don'tcha think?
