My dad's co-worker/friend is looking to sell his savage 99. Me and my dad are interested in buying it from him but we want to be sure we are being fair. I've been looking around on gunbroker trying to get an idea of how much we should give for it but I'm having a tough time. Some are going for $1000 while others are going for $400 to $500. I know this depends on the exact model and condition but I can't really seem to find what makes them so much more expensive then others.

The gun is a savage 99 in 300 savage. From what I can tell it was made in 1949. It has a schnabel forend and a counter on the side. I also believe it has a dovetail sight, not the ramped sight. He said that he found the letter "D" on the gun, but I'm not sure where at or what this might mean.

So if someone could point me in the right direction to what this gun might be exactly or to what would be a fair price for it, I would greatly appreciate it.

Thanks

Where the lever pivots is generally referred to as the lever boss. On the front of that, towards the muzzle in other words, should be a stamped oval, usually poorly stamped. 16A would be inspector # 16 and A = 1949. D would be 1952. No O or Q were used. Yours sounds older than 1949 if it has the dovetail front sight. No book in front of me, so is the stock straight grip or pistol grip?

If it's in excellent condition with no rust and little bluing wear and it's factory drilled and tapped on top for scope bases then about $300 for a private sale with some ammo with it.

I will not even consider one that's been drilled on the receiver's side for a side scope mount however I read some will.

They made a million of these 99's. Great rifle.

I would rather have one in 308.

Here is one in 308.

$400 now

We need the serial range, barrel length, condition of the wood and metal configuration of the forearm and if it is drill & tapped.

sounds like you have an EG model..and prices are all over the place, but it's value for most of us is based on "original condition".

There are several critical condition details, and pictures would help tell the tale for this round of discussion. You have the attention of the brightest 99 minds right here.

Here's one that is very nice original condition, with a desirable tang sight on it

I forget the exact serial number but it was somewhere around 510xxx. It has a pistol grip stock. It's also drilled and tapped for a scope but I think its just from the factory. No holes in the side of the receiver as far as I know. Also its a solid receiver, not a take down.

Also its in pretty good condition, both the wood and metal, and the safety is on the side of the lever, not the tang.

You are confused about the dovetail front sight.

It's an EG with that forend.

Most likely not factory D&T with that serial number.

You can pay whatever you want for it, but if you had to sell it, I'd say it's worth $500ish if it's in nice condition.

Less if not.

Sorry about the sight mix up. I meant to say that the rear sight looks like it might be a dovetail, however I could be completely wrong on that. I'm not even sure if they ever made them that way.

Also found out the barrel is 24" and the letter "D" is on the lever, which would make it the lever boss code I think.

The lever boss code we refer to is alphanumeric and is the date code. The number is the inspector and the letter is the year. A single D stamped on the boss is not the date code. What is the serial number??

You seem to be confused about dovetails. Nearly all 99s unless special ordered have a dovetail for mounting a rear sight. The front sight is also in a dovetail. Early 1899s were in the barrel and eventually a raised ramp was used. For a few years the takedowns had an integral front sight blade held in place by a tiny screw.

99EG's in south central PA are common. I wouldn't want to pay over $4-500 for such a beast that you described. In 99-poor areas of the country, you could tack on another 1-200.

I think that's over priced for a non factory D&T!

I'll send a non drilled gun in nice condition for $500 + shipping.

Yeah, but the average non-Savage loony Joe doesn't look at scope mounting holes as a detriment, since his first thought is "what kind of scope should I put on it?"

I think it could sell for 500ish if it were in nice condition even with the non factory holes.

Not that I or anyone else here would buy it, but somebody would...
