Only pilots used to be controllers- FAC. Now JTAC- Joint terminal attack controllers is, at least within the US, the purview of Air Force and SOCOM enlisted specialists.
JTAC's have actually been performed by enlisted USAF specialists for decades. I was a few weeks from going to JTAC Tech School, when I was going Palace Chase in 1989. At the last minute they found me a billet at ESC, so I didn't have to change AFSC's. Not knowing we'd get to play in Iraq in a few years, I'm glad I got to keep targeting missions from Scud range, rather than AK-47 range. Tell me about it when I went into the Navy fresh out of High School back in 1958 there were no hostilities at that time and I didn't want to become cannon fodder if anything did breakout and when the Navy offered me a special weapons ratings I knew it would keep me even farther from the front lines, my momma didn't raise any fools, I took it. As a result, I never got outside the Continental US when that little conflict called Vietnam went into high gear. With that said I'm sitting back here reading this thread and eating popcorn electing to refrain from commenting as I've been out of the loop for fifty years.

Next generation will probably no longer be carrier based and will work along with the helicopters. Maybe not this example but something similar: Link Phil Where is the 30mm cannon? Does one really need a 30MM or even a 20MM cannon against guerrilla fighters? Just asking. You need something to give the pilot a bit more standoff than a 762 minigun and a small plane can't carry many missles. A 30mm probably is overkill, as it was designed as a tank buster.

There's the big fifty for CAS with guerrilla fighters.

If the wing and fuselage hard stations on the A-10 are strong enough, gun pods could be mounted on them. The AF had 20mm gun pods for F-4C & D models. 50 cal gun pods would be cost effective. Mini-gun pods would put the plane in range of small arms and that's why they were taken off of C-130 gunships. When the enemy was in range so was the plane!!!

It won't work. It only cost 20 million to build and 3,000 dollars to operate an hour. It also has a long life span. A true CAS plane has to cost at least 20 billion a copy with a minimum 60 billion R&D cost overrun and a very short life span. You have got to understand how the game is played.
