I'm new to Savage 99s but have wanted one for a long time. I was able to pick a Savage 99EG (circa 1946 from the serial no.) up for $250 at a local pawn shop. It needs a good cleaning and I'll probably refinish the wood.

It is missing the rear sight, the pistol grip cap, and has a Pachmeyer replacement recoil pad. I have looked at Numrich and on Ebay and may have found replacement parts. However, I'm unsure what is the proper rear sight and butt plate.

This will never be a show piece (was drilled for a scope sometime in its life) but I'd like it to look nicer.

If it has a recoil pad, then the buttstock has probably been cut straight so that an original buttplate won't fit any more. Search for 99EG on gunbroker and you can probably find lots of examples of original sights.

Reproduction grip caps are all over the map in size. Buy 10 and get the one that fits the closest and sand to shape.

If you really hate the recoil pads (as much as I do), I've had a couple rifles fitted with a generic plate that's ground to fit. Probably would run $70 for a gunsmith to buy it and fit it for you. Ends up being a bit short (1"? Less?), but the difference hasn't bothered me.
