Traverse City A federal judge on Friday threw out an Obama administration decision to remove the gray wolf population in the western Great Lakes region from the endangered species list a decision that will ban further wolf hunting and trapping in three states.
The order affects wolves in Michigan, Minnesota and Wisconsin. The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service dropped federal protections from those wolves in 2012 and handed over management to the states. U.S. District Judge Beryl Howell in Washington, D.C., ruled Friday the removal was arbitrary and capricious and violated the federal Endangered Species Act. Unless overturned, his decision will prohibit further wolf hunting and trapping in the three states, all of which have had at least one hunting season since protections were removed. More than 1,500 Great Lakes wolves have been killed since federal protections were removed, said Jonathan Lovvorn, senior vice president of the Humane Society of the United States. The group filed a lawsuit that prompted Howells ruling. We are pleased that the court has recognized that the basis for the delisting decision was flawed, and would stop wolf recovery in its tracks, Lovvorn said. Fish and Wildlife Service spokesman Gavin Shire said the agency would issue a statement shortly. There was no immediate reaction from officials in the three states.

A desperate attempt by HSUS to shut down wolf hunting. Notice they went judge shopping and went out of our district.
The judge's husband runs National Geographics, no agenda there.
I'd expect her order to be vacated before hunting season.

"wolf recovery" That's the problem I have. There is a reason they were removed from the population. If wolves can't survive without "protection" they should be gone.

I agree Pat. How much damage are the wolves going to do before (if ever) we're up to carrying capacity?
People are loosing numerous bird, rabbit & bear dogs in the UP to wolves.

I used to work in NW MN and canoed the hell out of the boundary waters when there were lots of moose and some wolves. Then the moose started declining and there were more wolves.
For a while they thought the moose were disappearing because of climate change.
I like wolves and I like moose, deer and elk. The part of the equation that seems to be forgotten is that the prey cannot migrate like they used before civilization to avoid predation. They are trapped in killing zones for the wolves.

...it's all very odd that Minnesota has wolves but South Dakota has none. Must be the lack of wolf crossing signs at the border.

This will be repealed in a nanosecond. The judge is a known fruitcake activist and her hubby works for National Geographic.
No schit.

They've pushed as far east as they could go and are crossing the ice bridge that joins the UP to the LP. Now they're establishing packs in the northern lower peninsula.

The wolves have made it to SD. Y'all just thought you were shooting unusually large coyotes.

1600 wolves killed since delisting? If accurate, they sure as hell ain't endangered!

They are Minnesota stock that spread to Wisconsin and upper michigan. Minnesota has always had a lot of wolves. It was the only place in the entire lower 48 where they weren't completely extirpated.

The Minnesota line is ten miles east of here. From that point Lake Traverse runs north to the Red River. Just south Big Stone Lake runs south into the Minnesota River. SD highway 10 runs between them, you can throw a rock from one lake to the other. (Where does the water come from??) Anyway that's the natural point of entry from Minnesota, that or around Traverse to the north and through North Dakota. Saw a really dandy wolf just west of the crossing point one year and never heard anything about it. With at least one farm raising calves every section or so you'd expect that. Those damn big coyotes must get shot on sight along with the regular size though the hide buyers will never know.

If accurate, they sure as hell ain't endangered! people need to learn the difference between "endangered" and "absent from historic range"....going by their definition for wolves, elk should be endangered along with just about every critter over 40 pounds but coyotes and whitetails....

As expected, wolves from the growing population dispersed to establish territories outside the park where they are less protected from human-caused mortalities.
