I was just listening to Garner and some old Jamal last evening. My father was a fan, and I inherited his entire jazz collection as well as the stereo he built and played them on prior to his death in 1963. (yeah, it's tubes).
I have quite a few Garner records. Great jazz piano. He ranks right up there with Oscar Peterson in my mind.

I almost enjoy watching him play as much as hearing his music.

At 5'2", he was a giant.

Had the pleasure to meet him and play opposite his act in the Pittsburgh area many, many years ago. EG was an unique talent and piano player - owned a most recognizable style and could generate strong rhythmic drive - one fine player, and always have enjoyed him a ton.

He did not possess the technical abilities/training and phrasing facility of OP or the improvisational mastery and fluency of AT but, then again, those guys did not do some things that Errol did so well.

There is an hour long special airing on Starz (DirectTV ch 530) right now about Erroll and his life. It will be repeated on 12/24 twice and 12/25 and 12/28. A very fine biography of a very fine piano player.
