saving up for my next rifle. looking for a good all weather rifle. looking now at the winchester model 70 extreme weather. any fans of this rifle? good accuracy? smooth action? was first considering the browning abolt stainless but after reading about some failures in the field and trigger freezing im not sure about it.

I have one in 270. Very pleased with it. Good accuracy. Smooth action. Some don't like the stock, but it feels ok to me. Can't speak to the trigger freezing issue...doesn't get that cold here.

The enclosed trigger is really the one issue I have with the new Winchesters. I guess its easier/cheaper to make a nice trigger as seperate enclosed unit, but the simple open trigger was one of the key features that made a m70 a m70. If they would go back to the old trigger design I could see me owning several of the new m70's

Love mine shoots very well it's in a 325 wsm

I have one in .270 WSM. It puts 130 Partitions into about an inch all of the time. Yes, the pistol grip seems to be a bit clunky to me but I can easily live with it. Have to admit that I've been biased towards Winchesters since I was a kid, so....

The trigger freezing issue is a moot point, as the MOA trigger in the new model 70 is just as susceptible to freezing as the browning trigger. With that said, I've never had problems in the field with an enclosed trigger freezing up, but have heard it can be a problem with rifles that are subjected to days of freezing weather.

Here's a picture of a EW 7 WSM. I bore sighted the rifle and fired a round to see where it would hit on the paper, and then shot these next 3 groups.

My 308 is a keeper. I liked it as it came from the factory,but love it after replacing the stock with an Edge. No issues at all in about 4 years. If mine doesn't put 3 shots under 1" it is because I screwed up. Not picky about any particular bullet weight or brand either.

While I'd have preferred the old style trigger I can find no fault with this one as it is. Other than the Ruger Hawkeye and pre-FN made Winchesters everyone else using enclosed triggers. Only the Remington trigger has ever had any issues and that is because it is a completely different design internally.

I have a 300WSM that's been a great shooter, stock is much better than most other factory offerings but I prefer McMillans. I'm thinking of sending it down the road - just prefer the New Haven models and have several.

A year and a half ago I bought the Win M70 Ultimate Shadow in .30-06 and have been very pleased with it. Good trigger and smooth action and it shoots sub m o a. As far as the trigger freezing I have not had that happen on any rifle, but have also heard it is a problem with Browning rifles. I bought a Browning AB3 back in sept and will not buy another Browning rifle again. What a cheap piece of junk. It will be traded off soon. Enjoy your rifle.

Really like my M70 EW in 270 Winchester.

I just picked one up in 300 wsm a few weeks ago. Fit and finish are excellent. Bolt is extremely smooth. Only shot a few quick groups with 165 grain Federal Fusion but it shot less than an inch at 100 yards. Hoping it will do even better when I hand load for it. I've heard some complaints about the b&c stock but I like it a lot. May not be a McMillan but it is way nicer than the typical cheap Tupperware stocks.

I don't want to carry an 8 lb rifle all day. But the fact of the matter is that everything I aimed my Mod 70 EW in 270win died. I even killed a few yotes out to 200yds offhand with that EW. I never missed, never shot twice. I shoot a 270 EW very good offhand.

Like an idiot I sold my EW 270win. It shot MOA all day everyday. I will own another. The sooner the better for my "freezer's sake". Owned a couple sub 7 pd rifles and my current set up is 7.5 pounds and all I can think about is that EW I sold. Hunted with 150gr Partitions. Stock was a bit bulky for my taste.

Our own JJhack said it best when he stated, "I would not be driven to ultra light weight rifles at the expense of a steady solid hold".

JMR, what does your 308 weigh in the edge, and any other mods?

With the Edge stock, Leupold 2.5-8X36 scope and Talley lightweight mounts it is 7 lbs 5 oz.
