I have. I used W-760 with the 220 gr. Sierra round nose. If you get one of those "One Book/One Caliber" loading books, there's a whole bunch of data to load 220s in the .308. TYhe Winchester data gave a starting load of 42.0 gr. of W-760 for 2177 FPS at 42,000 C.U.P. for pressure. The max load was 44.0 gr. of W-760 for 2295 FPS at 46.900 C.U.P. That max load clocked at 2310 FPS from my Pre-64 Winchester M-70 Featherweight and from a Winchester M70 Youth Ranger that's been restocked with a Ramline stock. Both rifles have a 1 in 12" twist rate in the barrel. If your rilfe has a 1 in 10" twist, then be sure to work up from the starting load. I haven't had a chance to gtry the Hornady bullet yet as it seems some of the local shops don't seem to want to carry the bullet. I had to find the Sierras at a gun show. This brings up an interesting point. For quite a few years after the 30-06 came out, people considered the 30-40 Krag as being the better round for elk. Seems like the 220 gr. bullets of the day were not strong enough to hold up under 30-06 velocity. I forget who wrote that, but I think it was John Wooters. This made me think. If the 30-40 Krag was good for elk at 2,000 FPS, surely the .308 Win. could do better than that. Well, it can. Not only that, but the load was very accurate. FWIW, that 2,300 FPS is only 100 FPS slower than the 30-06's advertised velocity. Of course, I know you can beat that speed in the 06 with careful handloading, but it is something to think about. Might even be interesting to chronograph some 220 gr. 06 loads and see where they stand against that .308 handload. Anyway, that One Book/One Load will have data for the 220 gr. bullets from just about everybocy in the business. The sad news is the Hornady data in that book excludes their 220 gr. bullet. Hope this helps. Paul B.

Thanks PJ , try as I might I could not find any info for this bullet weight in the 308 all my sources of data dried up after 200 grs. Funny how Hornady lists data for the 220 in the Krag & the Russian , but not the 308.

I'm sure that the 220 will be fine in most 308's. The odd one may not stabilize it well, but I believe that most will. FWIW, the 30-06 will make 2550 with the 220 in a 24" barrel with Norma MRP, Reloder 22 or Vihtavuori N-165. But most factory loads I have chronographed will not make 2400. Regards, Eagleye.

I load 210gr Bergers to over 2500 fps in my .308 via RL15 and a 26" barrel. W760 and Ramshot Hunter look like good powders to maximize velocity with the 220grRN. Here's a quickload powder list. These would be max loads, so back off and work up safely.

The 220 grainer should work with the .308, but keep in mind that it won't be a long-range shooter with it. But it will provide the biggest punch from your .308 at closer range.
Not to take anything from such a great little caliber (the .308), there is a nice article about it's bigger brother, the ".338 Federal" August 2006 issue of the NRA's "American Hunter" magazine.

A 220 grain roundnose at 2500 fps can be pretty flat shooting, and deliver a ton of thump, to 200 yards.

I messed around with them for my Model 88. It just took too much powder space to fit the rounds into the box mag. However the 220 gr Rn in my .06 is an elk killer

In my Ruger ultralight I loaded 220 Sierra rn's over RL 15, VV N-550 and H-4350, and worked up to 2150 fps from the 20" tube, and got nice moa triangular groups.
I couldn't see any benefit of that load vs good 180's @ 2600 for hunting use. But since that 308 was the first rifle I ever loaded for, I had to try alot of different combos.
I'd have to dig out my notes for the loads I used, it's been quite a few years.
