Trying to make a play does not mean forward progress has not stopped. He doesn't have to give up on the play for forward progress to be called.

QB was still trying to throw. Play wasn't dead. If he'd got it off they'd have called it a pass wouldn't they? Correct, on if he got the pass off, but that still does not negate forward progress. Play does not have to be dead to call forward progress. Players do not have to give up on making a play for it to be called. Yes the rule benefits the offense but that is the rule. Correct call on the field.

Yep, initial contact was made outside the EZ & pushed back. To be a safety, the initial contact would have had to be in the EZ. MM
