Anybody who has had there bolt straight fluted by Karl, what kind of weight reduction did you get?

I'm specifically looking at reduction on a .308 caliber Rem 700 sporter barrel.

Thank you

Lilja has a downloadable spreadsheet on their website that you can use to calculate barrel weights including fluting. You should be able to get a pretty good approximation.

Bolt fluting will drop a couple tenths of an ounce. Basically a waste of money if you're doing it for weight savings. At least the straight bolt fluting will be less of an avenue for crap to get into your magazine compared to the helical fluting.

Barrel fluting on a Remington sporter contour will save a few ounces.

While I have no experience with kampfield fluting, I had another smith spiral flute a SS 700 LA. Similar to Ti style fluting though slightly less aggressive. Net weight loss= .46 oz

I see both bolt and barrel, so not sure which your asking about. Here is what the bolt will save with the Ti fluting and handle skeletonizing from Kampfeld. Both have aluminum shroud/fluted steel pin. About 1.7 ozs for a short action 700.

Straight fluting on a bolt seems a bad idea - won't the flutes catch on the rounds in the magazine?

OOPS,
I was in a hurry before heading off to the sawdust factory.

I meant to ask about weight reduction on the rifle barrel.

Straight from the source:

"My best guess on the barrel would be 4 oz. You might be looking at another oz. for fluting the bolt and handle. "
