Hey guys and gals,I was cleaning the G I asked advice on in my last thread when I thought I should check the numbers under the butt plate. I knew it was a match but had to check. When I looked in the hole where the screw head should be showing I saw a roll of paper, my hopes of the original sales slip died quick, but there was a nice note with the previous owners name and town. How in the hejj this gun got to Texas from Searspointe Maine I can only guess.I was wondering if anyone else has found a little nugget of history in their gun that they would like to share.

I recently acquired a 99EG in 358 and when I checked the stock it had a piece of paper with the place of purchase and price. It was purchased in the early 80's for $325. Put it back in there. I am going to add another piece with my story of how I got it and what I paid for it and put it back in with the other. I did well on my purchase, but I sure wished I would have only paid the $325.... Added:

I bought a Swiss K11 mil surplus a while ago. Had original owner name on paper under butt plate. I understand that was common practice for gun/country.

I found a 1950s Wyoming antelope license rolled up in the buttstock of a deluxe Remington 722 in .257 Roberts.

Yeah, I found a nugget under similar circumstances. Didn't know folks routinely did that. Bought a Marlin .35Rem from my uncle. He had acquired it from somebody out in CA. The stock and forearm were terribly mismatched so I ended up painting them. When I took the butt-plate off, I found a small piece of paper with a name and address from NY. How it got from NY to CA would be an interesting story. It got me wondering, wouldn't people take those out when they sell the firearm? I've always hoped I wasn't in possession of a stolen gun, but how would a person know.?

My thoughts were that IF my guns were stolen, said thief wouldn't remove the buttplate to check for ID and maybe someday I recover it. Or maybe someone that finds it in a hundred years will say "Who the heII is this?"

I have a good huntin' buddy here in Montana who found a South Carolina Upland Bird License from I believe the 1920's or 30's in the butt of a 16 gauge Model 12.

I traded for a 1894 Winchester 38/55, half mag short rifle and found a hunting license dated 1903 from Greenville Maine. It was a handy little rifle. That knowledge of it's history was neat. If only my old guns could tell their memories.

Posted this a month or two back when I bought the 99-H, 300 Sav with original shipping box...
"Box shows shipped from Montgomery Wards, Denver, CO to "Sulfur Springs". The selling dealer is in Montana."
Pulled the plate and found a paper with the owners name and location. I could only read "...Sulphur Sp... on the box for a ship to but it actually was shipped to:
Verne E. Atkins, White Sulphur Springs, Montana.
"Verne was born April 21st, 1907. September 12th, 1988 Verne Atkins passed away in White Sulphur Springs, Montana at the age of 81." (Google Obit)
The only other one was an 1899H with the guys name, address and "Dec 1919" written on the back of a LA CA sporting shop.

Found about 20 old wooden matches rolled up in a chunk of brown waxed paper in one of my 1895's.

Note in stock of 1887 Winchester lever action shotgun butt stock. I " '' traded two coyotes for this gun 04-15-21 to " " . Don't remember exact wording but is close. Put it back and added my name on another paper. Long since traded off. Guy I got it from was from Missouri and had inherited it from someone in Washington state. (Not name on note.) GW

couple of guns with an extra round in the butt . one with few matches in waxed paper. I have left busness cards in a few and will do on every gun I sell from now on.

Picked up an SRC in .303 from a guy in BC about three years ago and found 2 thin metal bands one yellow one blue folded up inside, one was a Deer tag and the other was an Elk tag. No idea how old they would be.
