I found one like brand new $499. Thought it might make a fun gun. Anyone have one and what do you think of the price?

Buy it. Nice short range heavy cover rifle. I'v got one of the older semi-autos that will stay in my safe until I no longer have any use for any of them.

Agreed, you'll probably later regret not buying it. If memory serves the twist rate is favorable for heavier bullets as well.

Yes, it's a 1/20 twist. I have a 77/44 and use 300 grain LBTs in it.

Good price, will make a fun gun. Easier to reload for than the semi-auto.

Buy it! If not post a link and I will. Because of recent changes in some of the states regulations allowing pistol caliber rifles to be used in shotgun only zones, they have became very popular and expensive. Check Gunbroker for what they're selling for, you can flip it for a profit if you don't like it. I have one that I bought for my father-in-law many years ago and got it back when he passed away. I've shot it a few times and it's as accurate as my Marlin 1894. My son-in-law used it to bag a nice 8 pt last season.

Sweet rifle. I definitely regret selling mine. I just recently bought one of the rereleased 77 44's. Nice light little rifle, but I still prefer the 96. If they started making them again, I would buy another one without a doubt. As far as the price goes, people are paying stupid money for them right now. jmho.

Buy it. I love mine. Very handy brush gun and it hits hard at short ranges. Good price too. They have a reputation for not being accurate. Mine will shoot about 2" to 3" at 100 yards. Plenty good for deer hunting in the brush. Very fast handling and short lever throw. Not unlike the Marlin 62. Mine likes 240s best. Paid about $400 for it ten or so years ago. Came with a cheap Bushnell 1.5 x 4.5. Shot so well I never changed the scope.

Ruger's line of .44 carbines have always intrigued me. I'd like to someday add a Deerfield to my safe.

It's a bargain at that price. Don't let it get away. Buy it ASAP.

Yep - buy it. The nice thing about the 96 is you have a lot more leeway to tinker with bullet types and weights compared to the semi-autos. For just 2 examples you can use cast bullets without clogging the gas port, and, you can shoot 44 special.

I love my semi auto carbine but it chokes on anything other than 240gr jacketed.
