Hey everybody...

Being a relatively new hunter, I don't and haven't had the time to figure out by myself how big deer droppings can get and approximately what size deer go with what size droppings. It would be very helpful to me if the campfire could collectively shed the collective light of it's collective wisdom on the subject. Thanks.

Ok...as a blacktail hunter, let me start with this: I have found that the size of the droppings can usually be related to the size of the deer, but, unfortunately, the food seems to affect them too. I have no scientific basis for this, but sometimes I will end up equating big droppings with little deer and vice-versa.

Anybody else want to chime in.......?

If you spend some time in a decent deer area, you will see lots of pellet groups. Deer leave about 13 pellet groups in about 12 hours.
Most will be about the same size. These are from does and young bucks. The half size pellets are from fawns.
But the 4 yr. old class bucks will leave much larger pellets - 50-75% larger.
If they are slick, and soft, they are fresh. E

On an adult whitetail the pellets are about the size of a pinto bean. As a rule of thumb the bigger the pellet the larger the deer but not a sure thing. Depends on diet, weather, what the animal is doing, lots of things. Only thing you can say for sure by observing droppings is that there was a deer in the area.

BCR

There is a book out there by a fella by the name of Dr Ken Nordberg, get it. It is full of all kind of stuff like this.

"GET TO THE HILL"

Dog
