Do any of you raise bees?
I have a few hives and am looking for some books to increase my knowledge, I would like to take this a step or to further and sell some honey. Theres plenty to read out there but I don't want to read them all, whats a good one.

jimy Do you buy your supplies locally ask them about a book or two, as you want info about your region . What applies in your area will be much different than somebody in the south west for example. I raised bees in CA and expect it is quite different in PA. Cheers NC

The bees I have come from swarms I have caught, there are a few hives in back yards from old farms but young folks don't seem interested, I am, I need to learn the logistics of bees, what makes more bees, happy bees, and bees healthy enough to get through our long winters.

jimy, I'm in my third year, and have only two hives. If they survive this winter in good shape, I hope to make splits this year. I have a few books, but the bees just don't seem to be interested. Seriously though, I think that Michael Bush's book, The Practical Beekeeper( 3 volumes) would be excellent. Also,Beesourse forum, is a great source of info. Kinda like 24hourcampfire for beekeeping!!!! memtb

Jimy- lots of resources out there for raising bees today. I don't know what state your in, but most have a program through state universities that have some great programs.
I'd start with google.

ScottF should be along shortly....... Scott has been ill the last several days, and his BIL is very ill and is in the hospital awaiting treatment today, which unfortunately could prove to be life threatening.

Until Scott F feels well enough and has the time to check in at the Campfire, it should be helpful to read through some of the past threads about their bee keeping and commercial honey processing operation. http://www.google.com/cse?cx=016407...=UTF-8&q=Honey+Scott+F&sa=Search

I have seen where a beekeeper has his hives on a platform about 20' off of the ground. They are in the middle of a field on the west side of I77 near the Va/NC line. I suppose what you have pictured is the reason.

Have you tried electric fences? I haven't needed them for bears but I've heard they work very well if properly designed.

Somehow I missed Scott being sick. I hope it is nothing serious. I did know about his BIL. miles The doctors have changed their story. The brain cancer is not curable but it may be treatable. If nothing is done he may have two months. With the best case treatment he could go on another two years but this kind of cancer is so rare they do not have enough data to really judge. The first treatment may be as early as Friday and may kill him. If the tumours start bleeding he is gone and that may happen.
Mi wife is home tonight for the second night in ten days. She is exhausted and needed a shower and a nights rest before going back.
I have been sick in bed since Friday. Today is the first day I felt like getting up but I am on the mend. Tough times in our family.
Your prayers are greatly appreciated. http://www.24hourcampfire.com/ubbthreads/ubbthreads.php/topics/9556957/Re_BIL_Update_II#Post9556957
