For their final tour, RUSH drummer Neir Peart had a very special drum kit built. The entire kit is made from a single log...a 1,500 year old log found at the bottom of a river in Romania. [video:youtube] https://www.youtube.com/watch?featu...8&v=o78bcxVXyVM&x-yt-cl=85114404[/video]

I played for 20+ years and loved to try and play along with Rush. Mentionng Moon was another biggee. Loved playing his stuff because it made people think you were really 'good'. Usually fast and energetic but not overly tricky really.
The snare rustling while he speaks brings back a lot of fond memories. My step son inherited many of my pieces and really took it to a scientific level. Can't wait for him to see this. Thanks GG.

I can't wait to see them again when they come. I was just inspired recently to build a kit that my son can eventually use. I will build using staves instead of ply glued together in a mold though. Something like this, but a whole kit: http://www.woodworkingtalk.com/f9/stave-drum-build-52391/

On rare occasions I've come down on the same side as the administration, but that doesn't mean I have any love for the SOB. It's kinda sad that you think anyone who doesn't agree with your political views is a communist. Republicans are a whole lot closer to socialist and communist than I've ever been.

Yeah, a few simple jigs and a router. MUCH cheaper than a lathe large enough to turn a 22" bass drum.
You can actually make the outside jig adjustable for different sizes, and the inside jig just needs to be long enough to allow doing the inside of your largest drum diameter, and it will still work with your smallest size that you can fit the router into.
No 8" rack tom for me.

ByQuandry I meant - how could anyone??? To clarify for you and all, I do not think you are Pro bammy at all brother. Apologies for poorly executed jest. Anyone else look at other sets these folks made? Beautiful stuff.

It is much more fancy than the drum I am building out of 2x4's Thanks for posting this and getting my ass into the shop to get 'er going. It looks promising. Table-saw setup wasn't as bad as I thought it would be. I used a digital angle gauge and was damn close the first try. I will do another pine mock-up with 1x3 tomorrow before I start making sawdust with "real" wood.

I ordered some HUGE ones. Should be here Wednesday.
The pic was just a dry run to get the angles right. I will actually glue up the shell made from 1x3 pine and mill it round with a router jig.

Some of the stuff I have read about gluing up the shells say that the straps (instead of giant hose-clamps with a worm-gear tightening system) apply unequal pressure to the shell and can lead to slightly out of round shells. I don't know if that is true, but for under 40-bucks shipped I got a hundred feet of the metal band and enough hardware to make 10 clamps. I will make a few for snare/tom sizes and three or four bass-drum sized clamps and be set up for life. Oh, and I got the crud. Next weekend doesn't work for me. I am going to winter camp with my son for Cub Scouts. I forgot that it was coming up so soon. I am off work Monday and Thursday this week though.

I can see that happening pretty easily. most I have ever done is 8 pieces this is a tabernacle stand I made a few years ago for a monastery. the bottom is a turned octagon.

The woods that have spent time in a low O2 environment are suppose to develop a better tonal quality. I have a banjo that has a block rim made of sunken birch from the Great Lakes. One qualifier as to whether or not it has better tone, is a better player than I needs to bring out the tonal qualities.

(I know....its oak, so...no) I listened to a Rush album I had not listened to in a while the other day. He really is technically more advanced than anyone. Any an incredible lyricist as well. twofish

I love DW drums. The most awesome drums I ever played were Premier Signias. The best bass drums I ever played were Pearl Masters the bottom was amazing. DWs seem to be the most consistent. Toms are always open with lots of sustain unless they are wearing pinstrips and great tone, their bass drums are nice too. I don't know about any companies snares cause you can't beat a ludwig super sensitive. I am blessed to own 2 of them a 6.5" and a 5".
Neals new kit looks gorgeous but I would have loved to hear them!
