I'm planning on changing out the coolant in my 7.3idi soon, and was looking for some recommendations. I'd like to get a product with the additives already mixed in, rather than mixing them in seperately.
No good reason, just lazy I guess. <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif" alt="" />

The DMax uses the pink stuff, just like the gassers. I'd use whatever Ford recommends, although I think you'd need more "heatant" than coolant" where you live..............

BW...........I believe I've heard the Ford diesel requires an additive to prevent cavitation , or some thing to that effect , so I would check the owners's book if you have it , or with a Ford garage or maybe one of the Ford websites........the Diesel Stop is a good one..........

sd,
Yep, that's the additive I was thinking about. I don't have the owners manual, but have read up on the subject a bit over a oilburners.net. I haven't registered at The Diesel Stop because they refused my Yahoo e-mail account. I do read the forum as a guest.

With any diesels with liners(most but not all have them) cavitation or the pitting it causes is an issue. Most diesels have what looks like a filter but actually has additive in it that slow releases on them. New anti-freeze is fine but loses it ability to not pit over time hence the need for additives or the filters. I have some diesels that have been in my care since new for 25 years and have never had a pitting issue. They all have the additive filter thing on them. I don't even know what the reccomendation for the change of that filter is. I change it everytime I change the oil. On the otherhand I have a 73 Michigan loader that was 22 years old when I bought it, all original, that one day just had a high oil level. Pitting was the culprit though this cummings had the coolant filter, and I put a new one on when I got it, it must have not been done for a long time period before I got it. I also heard of a fleet of bus's that paid it no heed and started having problems in a couple years.. They make test strips you dip in your anti freeze to tell you it's conditioin. A worthwhile investment. I know alkali is a main ingrediant in the additive. FWIW.
