Picked up a used Ruger 10/22 to do a build project.

My "new" 20inch 10/22 (std profile - liked a stretched 8-1/2in barrel)has a dark grey laminated stock.

Was taking apart to SWAP THE BARREL with an 18-1/2inch factory barrel, and was surprised that 20inch tube appears SCREWED into the receiver!

That 20 inch tube won't budge!

Is it indeed screwed into the receiver?

Should I let a gunsmith remove the stubborn barrel?

I do have a vise on the workbench I could chuck it in, but was told its easy to crack the ALUMINUM receiver if one isn't careful.

RECOMMENDATIONS? What should I do? THANKS.

I don't know about the new as in this or last years model but the older ones had a very simple "pull it together" v block on the bottom of the barrel and receiver. I guess if that block is not there I'm outa advice. I can't see Ruger going to the expense of screwing a barrel in after all these years. My son gave me a new "takedown" for Christmas. I've fooled with a bunch of the older ones.
Be sure and put some good penetrant on the joint and let it sit awhile
Yes that receiver will crack if you whack on it wrong. If you can determine the thing is not screwed together then put it in the freezer overnight and then warm the aluminum with a heat gun. The steel won't warm up as fast and it should come loose. That will get an epoxy bedding job loose.

Should have mentioned this "new" 10/22 has the std V-block and two bolts that usually holds the barrel in the receiver. But hadn't considered that the barrel might be epoxied in.

Will try your freezer technique.
