I have an old Savage NRA 19 with the tiny receiver sight. It's very old. I'm old and it was my grandfather's so I know it's old.
The problem is the sight. Any problems taking this off and putting on a scope or some other fixed open sight? Suggestions?

If it's a 1919, then all you have to do is take the screws out holding the peep sight in place.
Not sure about a scope mount, was it drilled and tapped for one or are you thinking about having it done?

Early Model 19s with full length stocks have one screw securing a sheet metal peep sight at the rear of the action. Later full stock 19s had two screws securing a similar sight. The 1933 version has a different stock and action, (actually the third variation of actions), and two screw holes in the rear of the receiver and two screw on the barrel. All variants had their screws directly on top of the barrel with the 1933 model screws doubling as scope mounting points. Many of these .22 were drilled for a variety of scope mounts over the years. You could do the same, but it may not be preferable if your 19 has made it all these years unmolested.

I don't know about dual firing pins, but my early 19 has two strikers that hit the cartridge rim. I believe these were made before Savage introduced the 23A in I assume 1923. These actions are characterized by small ejection ports and a distinctively different bolt. Hope this helps.
PS - I just looked at my 19 and it has one additional screw hole in front of the breach.
