As Steelhead pointed out, one does not in any way lose accuracy due to a reticle change. You simply have to upsize your targets to be compatible with the heavier posts, and you'll end up with the same aimability.

That being said, I don't find the HD necessary in any way for shooting all the way through hunting season. I do prefer a #4 for its heaviness in guiding my eye quickly to the middle.

The HD on a 1.75-6x VX3 is one of my favorite combos around woods country, and going from woods to fields and back. I don't seem to have any issue shooting tiny groups, to 300, with it....but maybe that's spending a lot of time with opens, apertures, and low mag scopes, over the years. Not sure I'd really shoot any more 'fine' with a fine crosshair.....on true hunting rigs. Of course, I probably wouldn't put it on a 300 yard varmint rig, or any of my past 300 stuff. It's a great match for its niche.

I have a heavy duplex in a Leupold 1.75-6 or 2.5-8, can't remember which w/o looking, I'd sell. I prefer standard.

If I had to limit myself to one reticle for BG it would me either the HD or PD.

Shot them enough from the bench to prove you can shoot accurately with them. Great in low light and quick to the target in the field. On BG you are usually aiming for a large kill zone and for myself don't feel handicapped with the area they cover until around 400. Have pushed that range on Deer and it wasn't any handicap or all that hard to center the vital zone with a solid rest.

For the wood ranges the OP mentioned fat beats thin every day of the season.

I am LIKE YOU age wise and eye sight also plus I have my late father`s night blindness. Here in the THICK stuff in Alabama and our nocturnal deer a CHANCE at any Deer is fleeting and they are MOVING.
I am looking for a scope for my WBY MK V WLW 30-06 that will hold up so far I have busted 2 VX III 1.75-6x32 HD scopes a Nikon 2-7x32 Shotgun Scope and 2 FX-3 6X42 SCOPES.
I had found a OLD Redfield LO-PRO WIDEFIELD 2-7 and sent it to ABO for a refurb to try on my WBY ULW 06 but my brother talked me out of it!
Thanks for the info!

How did you manage to break so many scopes of a 30-06?

Wish I knew!
I have changed mounts, lapped rings etc. but I GUESS it`s the
low weight 5 3/4 lbs that has SOME Factor in it.
But it is a joy to carry and will group 3 Fed Blue Box 150 gr.
into a 1/2 in. after that the THIN barrel heats up quick!
I will keep looking

I hope that you use up all of your bad luck, bad karma, on rifle scopes!

Other than a couple that fell out of tree stands, the only rifle scopes that I have ever broken were cheap scopes on 10/22s. The quickest that I ever broke a scope was some sort of Chinese 4x that I got on an SKS and it fell apart while I was trying to focus it. The interior lenses had something like Vasiline on them, so the view through that gem would never have been clear.

Me too!
Leupold fixed ALL of them free of charge and I sold them all
here.
I could try a Leupold Shotgun Scope with the Heavy Duplex and see if
it would hold up.
I had a old denver made Redfield LO PRO Widefield 3-9 that I bought brand new years ago that had NO problems on my old 7 mag,300 Win mag
I then gave it to my brother in Idaho when his old Weaver K4 finally gave out on him.
He has had that same Redfield on a 7 mag,300 wby,270 WSM BLR.
and now on his Grandson`s Ruger American S.S. 308 Win.
NEVER has had a single issue with it at all.
That`s why I bought the Redfield LO PRO Widefield 2-7 and had it refurb at ABO to find something to work on my WBY MK V ULW 30-06.
But I let him talk me out of this one also!

My VX3 is holding up to my 6# Encore 358 loads, just fine so far. I think you just pissed off Murphy.

This. I like the HD in the Leupold 6x42: it is faster to acquire and stands out better in low light, to my eyes at least. I don't ask much more out of a big game hunting scope.

This. I have a Leupold 6x42 on my .30-06 Mountain Rifle and that is my primary smokeless powder rifle. I really like the low-light performance and speed of target acquisition.

Like the heavies for hunting here in SC, especially with our 1 hour after sunset ending time for hunting. Tried the #4 past two years and think it is the best yet. I think Leupold is missing the boat on reticles with 5000 options but a heavy or #4 in the most common scopes. The wide duplex is a waste in my opinion.

I have the same ul setup as you- put a swaro a line with a german #4 on it 10 years ag for elk hunting and its been perfect ever since, despite the occasional falls and bumps its taken over the years ----- I check it every year. worth the extra dough , maybe I m just lucky. ymmv

I have a VX-3 1.75-6 I ordered with a Heavy Duplex. Windage turret wouldn't track so when it went back to Leupold for repair, I had them install a German #4 which they did at no charge since they were having to disassemble the scope anyway.

The German #4 Reticle is my favorite. I have a Conquest, MeoPro, VX-R and the VX-3 with the German #4 and from now on that is all I will buy, except on my rimfires of course. I thought an illuminated #4 would be the cat's meow. For my eyes though it doesn't offer much improvement over a non-illuminated #4.
