I recently picked up a Browning 1885 High Wall in 22-250. after the serial number and on the barrel above the Browning branding is a small asterisk About the size of the o in the Browning barrel stamp.

Browning says the rifle was not recalled or serviced but they could not reference the asterisk. It appears to be factory as ther is no sign of a reblue and mark is consistent with the serial number depth.

Any ideas?

Call Browning & ask.

If it were a shotgun that would be the answer, but no idea

As I already mentioned, Browning had no reference for the asterisk. They asked for pictures which I sent them.

Browning did verify standard 22-250 caliber.

The fix for a barrel problem or a receiver problem was to replace both. If a rifle had problems a new barreled action was in order. Someone purchased most of these barreled actions and I would think a call to that person may tell if the replacement parts have the *. Sorry I have no name or number.

What you have done is not nearly as important as how you have done it!!!

Browning says the action was never serviced, recalled, or replaced...

When I read threads such as this, the wag in me speculates that two workers returned from a liquid lunch and jokingly stamped the asterisk just to confuse future collectors/owners…

The most important aspect of this signature line is that you don't realize it doesn't say anything significant until you are done reading it & then it is too late to stop reading it....
