Hello, I am brand new to this sight and please bear with me as my computer skills are lacking. I have a couple of savage 99s that that I am not to sure about. The first is I believe a 99h 22 hipower that has a pistol grip and a very long forend, approx. 2/3 the length of the barrel. does anyone know if this could be factory or not. The second is a 99f, 284 with cut checkering, the bluing and case color are very good but the wood not that great, it has some scratches and some of the varnish is coming off. Would it hurt the value to have the wood refinished. Thanks to all in advance.

Welcome to the site. Everyone is going to ask for pictures, as with most things, condition is what counts. Both rifles with condition are desirable. The 284F is on many wish lists. The 1899 H is a take down model offered in 22HP. The 99 H is a carbine, but I don't think it was offered in 22HP. The pro's will be along shortly to clarify. Post the serial #'s, put XX for the last two digits, and we can get dates of manufacture. If your 22HP is an 1899 H it would look like this, Joe.

When Savage changed the designation from "1899" to "99" the 1899H became the 99F. Mine is a 99F made in 1926, Joe.

99H wasn't available in 22 HP. It's probably an 1899H or a 99F. The 99F cut checkered 284 is pretty collectable. I wouldn't refinish it. Davd

140 grain BT with 45 grains of H4895 has worked for me. Start at 42 grains and work up from there.
This load also works well with the 139 grain Hornady SpirePoint.
140 grain Partition with 43.5 grains of H4895 has also worked for me, but has not been quite as accurate as the BT.
Remember that the Savage 99 isn't the most rigid action, so you will get case stretching and you will need to take that into account when you adjust your dies. Also, the Savage 99 action is not well designed when it comes to handling escaping gas from a blown primer or separated case, so extra caution is advised. The old "an ounce of prevention" theory.

22 hp with pistol grip?
What is serial number? Cut checkered stock and forearm?
Sounds like it could be a G to me...

99G or special order 1899H. Agree we need pics or at least serial number range. Either way it's an uncommon rifle.

Considered it might be a speical order H as well. Serial number would tell us.

Thanks for everyones information. Hopefully my wife will be able to help me upload some pictures later. The 284 serial number is 10739xx. The varnish is coming off it in spots and I was wondering if anyone knew of a varnish that I could put on that would not hurt the value. the hipower is a different beast altogether. It is a takedown and the serial number on the frame is 1218xx. The barrel has a serial number of 1393xx that is stamped next to the takedown threads. There is a "z" stamp on the barrel next to the serial number, there is also a "z" stamped on the front of the receiver. I believe this means the gun was sent back to the factory at some point. The barrel is 20" and the forend is 14" long. Both the forend and buttstock are checkered. There is no pistol grip cap. Do you guys think it came from the factory like this or did someone make up this rifle long time ago? Thanks again, Farmer

Gun started it's life as an H.
Take the butt plate off and check the serial number on the plate and stamped on the butt itself.

The butt plate number is 08. There are no numbers on the butt or forearm. We are trying to upload pics but are having a hard time.

Sounds like a possible factory restock or aftermarket replacement. Even a factory restock would still be sweet if it's factory checkering and pistol grip.
Serial number on the 284 makes it sound like a correct cut checkered 284. Nice!

pictures would be good. I have a couple of 1899Hs with pistol grips... they are out there though the lack of serial numbers does not make it sound original. No matter, we all still love to see pictures of savage 99s!
