My best ever! I shot the second relay, but the wind didn't get funky for the light gun portion. For those who do not know, the light gun class consists of three is 5-Shot groups at 1000 yds.

My groups were: 4.000", 7", and 6.75". I won for light gun agg and shot the smallest light gun group. 4.000" also qualifes me to receive an "Official Screamer Patch" from Precision Shooting magazine.

The wind picked up for the heavy gun portion (three 10-shot groups) and all the shooters in my relay were all over the place.

The hard work pays to the ones who dig and dig to find it. I was at the range this morning shooting my 6BR, I totally enjoyed that as I am seeing much improvement. I`m kinda saving my 6.5/284 barrel for a chance to ever shoot 1000. That was a day to remember for when things get rough, to get you through it. Graet shooting man.

We really seem to be affected by the wind here in Tucson, and the relay you shoot makes a big difference. Typically the first relay posts the best scores.

The winning heavy gun agg was 8.9". I would have really loved to shoot against that guy in the first relay. We work togather quite a bit on loads and such. He has a Patriot shooting 210 JLKs and I am shooting a 300 WSM with 220 SMKs. His gun just makes 17 lbs and mine is 15lbs 2 oz.

Great shooting, would you mind posting all the specs for your rifle? Really curious to learn what you guys use to shoot groups that small at 1000 yds.

There are many ways to small groups in 1K BR. The 6.5x284 and the 300 Mags are popular with a few 6mms and 7mms. The key seems to be to shoot a bullet that will drift 60" or less at 1K in a 10 mph wind, have extreme velocity spreads in the teens or less, and have a wide stable fore end running in a good rests/bags.

It seems that you typical "highly accurate" hunting rifle will have 5-shot groups that average around 10" at 1000 yds on a good day. They almost always finish at the bottom of the pack. I think that has more to do with the stock than anything else. A BR stock with a 3" wide forend is a huge advantage.

My rifle is a 300 WSM. I am shooting 220 grain Sierra Matchkings at 2738 fps with an extreme spread of 11 fps. It has a Stiller Python action with the right bolt, left port configuration and a 2 oz Jewell trigger.

The barrel was made by Benchmark barrels. It has a 1x11 twist, is 30" long, and wears a Vais brake. The stock is Bill Shehane's "Tracker" in African Obeche wood. I am using a Night Force 8-32x56 BR scope in rings with 20 MOA taper.

The barrel was fluted too much and the rifle is way underweight at 15 lbs, 2 oz. The gun could still make weight at 17 lbs, and the lightest Light Gun Class is 16.5 lbs so thr next barrel will be at least a pound heavier. It is important for these rifles to balance 1" forward of the recoil lug and mine does.

Here is a pic of the rifle and the rewsts I shoot it in. I made my own rear rest. NBRSA lets you use that kind of rear rest, other sanctioning organizations require a sandbag for the rear.

Thanks for the reply and the great pics. Hugely interesting, in particular about he balance point being in front of the recoil lug, I assume that is to ride the bags a particular way?
A very nice rifle, which obviously shoots exceptionally well.

According to Bill Shehane (who would know) If you don't have the rifle balance about 1" in front of the recoil lug you have to put downward pressure of the grip or groups will vertically string at 1000 yds. I shoot this rifle by placing my thumb on the trigger guard and my index finger on the trigger. My hand rests on the rear rest, and I just "pinch" to fire the rifle.
