Some of the Alliant powders are pretty dirty, the "name the color-dot"s. So what's a good all round 45 powder?

PowerPistol is my regular favorite & it quite clean, far, far better than either Unique or Bullseye.
SOLO 1000 when it's available is very clean & very low flash; AutoComp is also quite clean & a very good powder in the 45 ACP.

I don't find power pistol or 231/HP38 to be too dirty , some powders seem to get "dirtier" with lower charges IME

AA #5 is your huckleberry if you can find it. My back up is red dot, then unique.

Clean is a relative thing, no? Been using titegroup and no ncomplaints. HS-6 works well too, when you can find it.

LOVE Solo 1000 for clean burning AND practically zero muzzle flash in dark conditions. High speeds and dang accurate too with 230 Gold Dots.

HS6 makes some clean burning plinking loads..
I replace valve cover gaskets every 50K, if they don't need them sooner...

Long story short: I tried some TRAIL BOSS last summer. I didn't think too much of it; hoaky name but that's what the guy wanted me to use.
Stuff was a dream to load. It's a flaky powder, small silver/gray donut shaped so no measure hangups at all. In fact it's so light you don't breath heavy around it.
EXTREMELY clean burning. CLeaner than anything else I've ever shot in my SS 1911s. Including Power Pistol.
I think it was pretty cheap too.

Is it a "ball" powder like #9? Yes, but good luck finding it. Many suppliers don't even show it as out of stock anymore. They've taken it off their list of powders. Not a comforting thing.

Powder is still hard to find around here so I opted to try some of my left over (don't load for anymore) shotgun powder that always burned very clean. Anyone else try Hodgdon's universal clays in their 45's??? It's been working great in my 4506 with 230gr. xtp's...
I try to stick with the basics, they do so well. Nothing fancy mind you, just plain jane will get it done with style. You want to see an animal drop right now? Shoot him in the ear hole. BSA MAGA

Yep, both Clays and Universal Clays are good in my 45's but load data is not interchangeable.

In my book a way under rated powder for 45 (and others too) is red dot. If bullseye works red dot usually works as well.
