I am working on my first custom Mannlicher. It is a .257 Roberts on a VZ-24 action. I am laying it into a laminated Mannlicher stock for something a little different. What is the suggested method for bedding the barrel on a full length stock? With the nose cap on, it doesn't seem to make sense to free float it as it will contact up front anyway. Do I full length bed it with nuetral pressure? Pressure bed it? Assemble it and hope for the best without bedding it? Float it and open up the nose cap so it doesn't touch? The laminated stock should be less susceptible to warping than wood, so it should have less pressure on the barrel if it is full length bedded, right?
How about a little help here.

I used to have a Steyr Mannlicher Luxus in sttzen form. The bbl. was freefloated except for being screwed to the steel nose cap. Neverteheless, POI shifted frequently (not much but still) and I ended up selling the rifle.

I have a couple dozen mannlicher stocked rifles and the single best tip that I have for getting a mannlicher stocked rifle to shot is this:
Install a neoprene "O" ring around the barrel, near the muzzle, so that the barrel is supported by the cushioned neopene material where is touches, or could touch, the nose cap. The "O" ring also helps to center the barrel in the stock's barrel channel and you can move it forward/backward to "tune" the barrel harmonics. Why does it work? I don't know, but it has worked over and over again for me.
I have full length glassed a couple of mannlicher stocked rifles, but I like the neoprene "O" ring option since it almost always works to improve the accuracy and it is easy to remove to return the rifle to its factory original condition.

Fast_ED..... Check out a Rem. M-7 custom shop production Mannlitcher laminate ! Their bedding job is simple and effective, even though the forearm is very slender ! The metal end cap should not touch the barrel, it`s just for looks ! <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif" alt="" /> Edward L.
