Got a question for any mechanical guys who know the old 3 spd Simpson gear train transmissions. I'm in my final year of school right now and had a test question today that we can't agree on. We'll get the answer tomorrow but I bet someone here knows.
Question: If the direct clutch is stuck/welded on, what will the result be-
a)only reverse will work b)transmission will lock up at 1/2 upshift
there were a couple other options but they were obviously wrong. Anyone know for sure?

No help, but a prediction - within the next four responses somebody will drag cross-dressers into the thread.

I was very careful to write "transmission" out in full, as I had anticipated the possibility. We shall see..

Honestly can't remember, just that they weren't really plausible, something like it would have no effect or it would have no movement at all.

I would think on a 3 speed transmission it would not go into another gear lock in that gear

I am going to go with "A" that only reverse will work, but only because the other one just sounds wrong, and I am staying at the closest thing there is to a Holiday Inn Express in Westhope North Dakota.

Well thats plenty qualified! My first thought was reverse only as well, except that if you apply the direct clutch(already stuck on) and the forward clutch, you get 3rd gear or mechanical lockup, 1:1. Thats what was throwing me off, but I guess we will see. Talked to a master tech friend of mine, and he couldn't say for sure either.

I have to say I have never even heard of a Simpson gear train transmission but I'll bet if you weld the clutch in any position you won't be able to use the clutch. There is a Holiday Inn Express about 2 miles from here but I slept in my own home last nite.
