In college we made those and used newspaper to make the darts. Surprisingly accurate and with a push pin in the tip I was able to stick them into stuff at pretty decent distances.

Yep, I'll be building one (or more) of those.
I am very glad I didn't see this when I was a kid, though. I still might not be able to sit down if I had.

Now how do we get some real air pressure behind that dart. I built a life sized version equal to a howitzer 15 years ago. I used a 8" dia 3' stroke cylinder that was actuated by a lever which was actuated by a 2"x12" air cylinder. the little cylinder would compress the big one in a HURRY at 150psi and the resulting air rush powered a 2" cannon. this was shot once. It went so far over the planned 300 feet that it had to be torn down for safety and before we got fired.....lol.
I would not buy something that runs on any kind of primer given the possibility of primer shortages and even regulations. In fact, why not buy a flintlock? Really. Rocks aren't going away anytime soon.

The potatoe cannon that can be built from PVC pipe, an old grill friction igniter and valve and line system, and a propane tank is amazing. Or, so I hear.

Mom won't let me forget launching the first potatoes across the street into the neighbors yard a few homes down. That was the 1" pipe. We went to 3" and moved into the tiny forest behind the neighborhood. Splattering an enormous baker potato midway up on a tree trunk of a 100' tree would make the whole thing shake very noticeably. Those suckers had a little recoil too. Or so mom tells me...
It's about like this:
"Do you puff peters?"
"Hell no!"
"NAZI!!!"
