What is the best way to drift a bullet out of a barrel? Don't have a brass rod and wood dowel came apart.

Kroil plus a better (hardwood, large diameter) dowel.

Soak it in a penetrating oil. And by soak it, I mean fill up a cup full of oil, and immerse the barrel in it for several hours. Chances are you'll need a brass drift punch. Then you chuck the barrel into a vise with soft jaws, and beat the living crap out of it until the bullet comes out.

Hardwood dowel of correct diameter.

Kroil and alcohol never hurt a thing.

Jacketed bullet or lead bullet?

I don't like wood, as it can splinter and jam between the bullet and bore, just making things worse.

I've used brass and aluminum rods, but a good steel rod with the tip inside a 40 S&W case (assuming we're talking about a .45 barrel) works really well, and the bore is protected. A bit of tape around the rod to keep it from contacting the bore near the muzzle is a good idea.

And you may want to drive it out forward so the dowel doesn't splinter on the RN, FP, or HP of your bullet.

dis-assemble the weapon, never knock a bullet out a semi auto with the barrel in the piece. And they make brass squib rods of the correct size to remove it. Bulls eye shooters have this problem a lot.

Story:

My wife won me a para expert ducks unlimited 1911 in 9mm. 2nd clip 7th round (remington umc 115gr.) went fizz instead of bang.

Removed bullet and spent the next hour looking for the recoil spring plug that took flight...ya I'm new to the 1911's

You did good recognizing the round didn't sound right. Much bigger issues happen when you let go the next round with the first one still lodged.

Guess how I know that......

Now that's funny.
