Fella on another site is inquiring about this oddity and it occurs that you might, by very small chance, know something about it's origins.

.25 caliber bullet gun with FM and round barrel. Twist looks to be about 1:18.

1) .25 caliber ML
2) It has an unmarked bull barrel.
3) The lock has the name of a London maker, circa 1870's "Wm. Moore & Co."
4) Single set trigger
5) On the left side is an engraved target and the words 'In Memoriam John Buhmiller"

Buhmiller was known for large bores and Africa more than anything, but I've heard he dabbled with ML guns on occasion.
Couple of articles here on the 'Fire by Ken Howell about him, but otherwise I know nothing...

Wow. Looking forward to this discussion.

What kind of "bullet" would one use in a small bore/fast twist?

And when would fast twists become to fast for a ML?

My best guess as to what bullet might work is 60-70 grains give or take. The rifle is a variant of the old slug gun or bullet gun if preferred. Fastest twist I've seen in one of those was 1:16 for a .50 caliber 850 gr bullet. It is a very accurate rifle. I have a .40 cal gun with the same twist that shoots a 350 gr GG bullet.

Cant really help you with the maker judging from the looks and the false muzzle , I would guess that it’s a target rifle . As to twist going by the Forsyth principle , where small needs faster , then yes a 22 would carry a fast twist . As to whats to fast for a muzzleloader , I don’t think there is a rule for that as I have made muzzleloaders from modern center fire barrels and they shot very well with the respected bullets
