I stopped at a local shop today and saw a 788 chambered in 308, 22" barrel. The rifle has been carried but is quite clean for its age. It is 100% original. The asking is $325. That seems pretty reasonable to me. Thinking it might be worth picking up but I don't have a good sense of how the 788s are valued. I'd appreciate your input on this.

I'd offer $300, out the door, and be REALLY happy to get it.

Mu brother has two, one in .308 and the other .243. Both shoot very, very well.
300 clams OTD would be a good deal.

I’d gladly pay $325 for a 788/308, especially a 22” one.

In TX, $325 is a damn good price for ANY 788 in good condition!

Mostly they bring more than a 700. Mainly because they had such a reputation for being more accurate...and from my exp. they are...common cal tho but still well worth it..

Dave A Rem 788 in .308 in the condition you described is worth the 325.00 asking price. However, if I was looking for a heavyass .308, I would go for the Howa 1500 Lightning in .308 that Wittaker is advertising at 329.99 in the ubiquitous banner ads on this site. I already have a Rem 788 so that most likely influences my choice.

I regret every 788 I've seen for sale and didn't buy. They are great little rifles and usually go cheap. Accurate.

I really regret a 788 in .30/30 I saw years ago and didn't pick up.

The 788's in 30-30 and .44 mag bring some big bucks nowadays.

I had one in .308 years ago and it was plenty accurate. I'm not real big on detachable-mag hunting rifles (rattle too much) but 788's were good rifles in their price range.

I have had quite a few 788's both carbine and standards and never have seen one that didn't shoot very well.
If I were in the market for a 308 the one the O.P mentioned would be tough to pass up.
