The population has been on a steady decline for several years in my main hunting areas here in La, so nothing going on there lately. Not to mention it's rained nearly every day lately, so that hasn't made scouting very easy. I was able to locate some birds on my lease in one area and hoped I could get my nephew and my cousin's little girl on some action. It rained both days, so no talking on the limb. I ended up getting them fired up around 9 both morns despite the rain. Got my nephew on a bird Sat morn, but he locked up at 60 and wouldn't budge. It really started pouring after that excitment, so the rest of the day was a bust. Sunday morn I carried my cousin's girl and we ended up getting 4 cranked up about 9. We had a sure enough swinger to 80, but just couldn't beat the small flock of mouthy hens behind him. A bit later we got the other 3 to sound off, but the neighbor cranked up his tractor to move hay and that seemed to shut them down the rest of the morn. All in all it was an outstanding hunt and both kids laid eyes on big toms and heard some gobbling. I don't think they understood how lucky they were to have that kind of action in rain. It was a good scouting excursion as well, so maybe I can outsmart them next wknd.

Good luck to all of you.

the youth hunt here in tn is this Saturday

im sure plenty of kids well under 10 yrs of age (5,6,7,8ectect)weighing 50-60 pds will be slaying toms with 3.5"12 ga loads with "dads" help whistle

just like our youth deer hunt
ole junior lays down that big ole 12pt with a .300RUM at 312 lazed yards and he is all of 8yrs old shocked smirk whistle

I would feel confident in saying half if not more of the turkeys and deer killed on youth hunts in tn are really dad doing it all and junior is having a great little Debbie chubby treat time and playing supermario on the Gameboy in the ground blind the entire time

not saying anything in regards to the OP at all

just saying what goes here in tn

kinda like all the semiauto rounds you here going off on opening day of our muzzleloading season
and off course the telecheck/telepoach system is never misused according to some in this state with rose colored glasses on..

sorry for the hijack............

Great for them to at least see and hear some in hard conditions.
Good luck next weekend.

We are headed up to KY for youth weekend here in a couple of weeks. My daughter got her first tom there last year, hopefully it will be a little warmer this year. It felt strange to be freezing during turkey season last year

loader, good effort on your part and I am sure the kids had about as much fun if they would have shot. The best thing about hunting with kids is that if they don't score (or if they do), they just go back to being kids. On the other hand, I am tore up until I can get back in the woods! If I miss an opportunity on something nice, I may never recover! Ha!

trust me it was a fantastic day in their eyes. this year will be my sons last year participating in the youth hunt as he will turn 16 in September and no longer eligible. last year i posted a story my middle son wrote for school about his youth hunt experience on his last ever youth turkey hunt and i was pleasantly surprised to read just how much he got from these outings. now he is away in college and in a couple more years so will this last one. get them out whenever you can, it's the time shared together that they will cherish (so will you) the kill is just a bonus thrown in.

Help keep our sport going. take a kid outdoors!
