I see that Hornady makes a .243 100gr Roundnose. Has anyone used them to hunt with. I've had good performance from 6.5 160gr Roundnose Hornady bullets, so I thought I'd possibly try them in a .243. Most of my shots are under 50yds where I hunt.

For your situation I believe they would work superbly.
I've always had good accuracy with the Hornady brand and the round noses in particular have always impressed me.

I loaded 50 of those Hornady RN's for a hunting partner's Ruger 77 last year. I wasn't with him when he went to sight in, but he ended up using 100 grain Corelokts. He has this thing with remington Corelokts. At any rate, I still haven't seen them used on game. maybe I can talk him in to using them this year. I am sure he will hunt with that rifle again.

My son and I use 100gr Core-Lokts with great results. Most of our shots are under 100 yards. I'm sure you'll be happy with the round nose 100gr bullets. If the Core-Lokts weren't so inexpensive I'd consider the Hornady 100gr RN bullets.

They are interesting.. but I have to ask why? A good spitzer should be able to expand and do the job. Just for the novelty? Or is there some possible benefit?
Been using 95gr Nosler Partitions for 10 years.. everything from 20 yards to 250 yards out of my 243 and not anything resembling a failure yet. In one side, expand, and bigger hole out the far side. Even on the shoulders...
Not saying the RN's aren't the best thing in the world, but am saying I won't be finding out since I got something that works now.
Now, I got the roundnose things going on my 30-30 and 303 Savage.. ain't figured out why I'd want them on a 243.

Most of my shoots are under 50yds and I thought the roundnose would expand faster. Not as much jacket around bullet? I've had good luck with Hornady 6.5 160gr roundnose in the past. With that said I sighted the rifle in with 100gr Winchester Power-Points and will use them this season.

Under 250 yds, a Round Nose has both the range and the capability of providing both great penetration and good expansion, that I feel for my own use are as good as any "premium bullet".....
I zero all my deer loads at 3.5 inches high at 100 yds, so anything over 2250 fps at the Muzzle will still be only 3 inches or so low at 250 yds...Which is fine since most deer are taken at less than 100 yds.. ( yada yada yada ad nauseum)...
Round Noses just plain work regardless of caliber....And I don't think one needs a 500 yd load to make a 100 yd shot...

Conceptually I like Round Nose for closer shots, ie 125 yards or less. It is challenging to find them, however. Any easy and good supplier of the 100 grain round nosers?

Hornady makes them, so I guess anyone that orders from Hornady could get them. Oh by the way I've read your posts a few times about hunting in NY- you might want to look over at Huntamerica.com in the Deer section the moderator Don Wald is in NY and probably is familiar with where your going.

I have used the Hornady 100gr round nose in .243 for many years on deer here in PA and always had good results with them. I recently starting using the 175gr RN in my 7mm Rem mag backed my 68gr of R25 and they are insane accurate at 100 yards .5 moa 5 shot groups at 2933fps. Good short/medium range deer & bear medicine in the thick woods Ive been hunting. I also have a box of .30cal 220's laying around that I'm going to load up in the RUM, I definitly will be eating a few Tylenol before that brutal range session. <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif" alt="" />

I shot some 250 grn. rn. Hornady's in my Whelen yesterday, about 2'' at 200 yds.

Okay, I guess for you guys back east that can't get a 150 yard shot a roundnose makes a kind of sense.. Still would worry about the bullet possibly exploding on a shoulder shot rather than penetrating. I really hate it when bullets do that...
I hunt a creek bottom in the sandhills of Nebraska, so 90%+ of my shots are 100 yards or less, but if I take off walking a 300 yard shot is very possible. I keep the load a bit light with 95gr NPs so it's more dependable at those 25 yard shots, but the ballistics are good out to 300.

I wouldn't worry about blowing up on a shoulder. I used RN's in 300 Sav, 308, 30-06, 358 Norma and 35 Whelen. You could take a heart shot front, back or either side.

I love Round Noses in any caliber.. Thank God Hornady still is making them when every other manufacturer is dropping them... at under 250 yds, I always felt them penetrated better and were less fussy, plus always more accurate....
And 250 yds is all ONE usually needs to be shootin at stuff.. but that is your guys business not mine!
cheers seafire

I've used RN bullets from time to time from .243-.375's.
Even out to 200yds they will not make much difference with respect to terminal performance from the spitzer equivalent.
Why use them? They usually shoot real well, but beyond that I don't think there's a real need in non tubular magazines.
