I have an "as new" 99C (clip) with 24" octgon bbl. What is a fair mkt price? I am planning to start it on GB at 850. I know, I know, I bought high.

Thank you.

HUH????

The 99C never came with an octagon barrel?

I'd love to get a look at this gun, got pics?

Sounds like someone really Bubba'd up a 99.

MD. I think you are in error. The left over bbls from the 1971 commemorative issue were used on later mfg 99s. I have the factory box and end label. Admittedly the words "OB and 24'' are in ink. I got this from Kurt Chanti about 5 yrs ago and I believe he would not misrepresent anything.

Hmm.. guessing it's in 308? Commemorative barrel on a 99C receiver?

Just maybe a custom barrel..

That ain't gonna be worth anywhere near as much as you'd like, but like Joe said, give us pictures for sure.

News to me, I guess I must have just learned something new here but I have never seen an octagon barreled 99C. Yes, Savage used to use up alot of left over parts I'll agree with that for sure, but using up the commemorative barrels on C's?

I'm not about to argue with you, I think everyone here knows how I feel about the 1895 remakes and how Savage made the biggest marketing screw up ever in their life time with that "not even close" to a real 1895 repro. To me those 1895's were only knock offs anyways.

No insult towards you or your gun, I was just thrown off on the original post by you stating it was a C(clip) fed with an octagon barrel, never saw one before so it was an educated guess on my part. I'd buy a gray rat before I bought the commemorative though, just my .02.

Yes, commemorative 308 bbl on 99 C receiver. Do not have that picture thing down. My FFL does the pictures and posts on GB and stuff. I can barely use the computer and "cut and paste, urls and such" HA!
Perhaps I have an unreasonable expectation, perhaps not. The box should be worth something.

How did they match up the forearm from the 1895 to a clip fed 99C receiver?

Not a 1895 forearm. Looks like a standard pressed checkering forearm inletted to the flats on the octagon bbl. It is well fitted an the stock has presssed checkering also. Has a thin black decelerator pad fitted. I have no clue if it came this way or not. It was an unuaual piece when I was looking for a 99 to hunt with and I bought it. It looks so good I just could not bring myself to shoot it. With that heavy octagon bbl, it should be a heck of a shooter. But it could be a rare variation that few are aware of. Thats why I asked.

Cowboy, do the buttstock and forearm have matching assembler marks on them?

Was Savage still marking stocks and forarms then? I thought that by that time they were just sorta slapping stuff together to use stuff up and produce some kind of product so they wouldn't get stuck with all the left over parts. I wish Steve (Savageparts) would check in now and again so we could pick his brain about some of the later stuff. Didn't he work there in the '80s or so?

Yep, Steve was there in the 80's, early 80's I believe.

I'm not certain on the markings that late either, I know the 60's rifles had assembler marks that matched (not actual serial numbers) usually a letter and number mix. This gun should be marked some way or another.

Cowboy, can I get a serial number from you to get an idea of it's age, just cause it's got a 70's barrel doesn't mean it's a 70's receiver.

I'll be back in awhile, I'm gonna headf to the range and have some fun and maybe try out this new 430 I got. Might as well take an F with me while I'm at it in case the shotgun range is being used.

C4112XX. Where would those assemblers marks be? If removing parts is required, I have not done that.

Serial number puts it at 1975, the commemorative was made in 1970.

Yes, you'll have to take the buttplate off and check under it on the wood of the buttstock, the forearm should be marked on the back of the forearm where it fits into the receiver. If you really wanna get a little deeper, take the buttstock off and have a look on the inside of the receiver for the same markings.

1) I have a problem with the "Has a thin black decelerator pad fitted." statement. I think Savage was using a hard rubber plate at the time...not sure of the "decelerator" term.

2) Does the box have the rifles serial number stamped on it?

Savage...never say "never".

The serial # is on the box end label. It has come off the end of the box. I suppose it could be glued but I have had it in the attic and heat has affected the glue. .The butt pad may not be factory I do not know. It is not a hard plate. It is soft rubber and thin. I had not noticed that until today.

I do not have the set up to put a screwdriver to it and am not going to. I looked at the bolt face today to see if I could tell if it had been fired. The bolt face looks untouched to me. I have others which have been fired so I have a comparison. There are a couple of storage dings, not bad but there. I suppose someone could have replaced the standard bbl with an octagon one, but the work looks too well done to be after market. It looks new, the recoil pad may be an add on but the gun looks really good.
