Just got back from my 7 day trek in the high Sierras. I hope these pics will do justice to the grandeur of the area. Conditions were not right for one of those famous alpenglow shots. This trip followed a fork of one of the major Sierra rivers right up to the point where it jumps out of the ground. The pics also show the differences in the high canyon (glacial) vs. the lower reaches (erosion).

I selected a camp just within timberline as the destination lake was too windy. This is the view upstream. The bench on the left was heavy with deer in the eve. Altitude about 10K

About 1000 yds further upstream. The river is creeping out of the ground. Destination lake is under the cliff band in the center. This cliff band is the beginning of the "west wall" of Kings Canyon NP. This shows the 'rounded' glacial origons of this part of the valley.

[Linked Image]

Destination lake. Well above timberline at about 11K' Mountain in the background is ~~13K. Too windy to camp here but fishing was good, so I hiked up here each day.

[Linked Image]

One of several backcountry (off trail) lakes. About 11.4K. Fishing was stupendous. Impossible to camp. More lakes over the low pass at the top of the inlet stream in the background at ~~ 12K.

[Linked Image]

This shows the middle sections of the west wall at dusk. Profile is the rounded glacial type of valley.

[Linked Image]

This is the "east wall" at dusk showing the more pronounced 'V' shape of the lower canyon. The sharper "V" in the patch of light in the distance is about 6 miles out and 2K feet down. The path of the hike came up this valley.

"hunting" pics (fish) and gear reports will be posted in the backpack forum.

Can you believe that 95% of the people who live in the West never venture out and see this stuff?

FOOLS!

Looks like you had a great trip. Enjoyed the pics.

Jim,

Sounds like another great trip under your belt! Thanks for the pictures. You gotta be beat!

Thanks for the gear review on the other thread too.

(PS - I've been checking about every other hour this afternoon (from work) to see if you had returned yet ).

Nice - Just came back from a short trip to take kids up Mt. Lassen. The west is a blessed place indeed.

Thanks for sharing.

Outstanding Sir, thank you for the pics for those of us that must enjoy vicariously.

I'm glad that y'all liked the pics. They really don't don't do the scope of the area justice. One thing is for sure, this general area will get more visits from me.

Dan: I'm not as as whipped as I thought I would be. My legs are very fresh, and I might even run today. But! I've got a little 3-day 'er planned for a few days from now, so maybe I don't really need the run.

Jim,

Great pics!

I've spent quite a bit of time in the Sierras as a kid, and of course also here in AK. Pictures never do justice for the beauty of such places.

All I can do is chuckle - You must have trained ruthlessly this summer .
Haa, to be twenty something again, sounds like you've managed to gained some of that youth back !!!!

Looking forward to the fish pic's. And yup, fishin's just hunting with a different stick .
Went by Patagonia today only came home with a capilene Tee shirt - a cheap trip for sure.

Thanks for sharing Jim. Glad you found some good deer numbers. I haven't seen any good numbers in the high country for the last couple of years. I suspect it's the long winters and their reduced numbers in general. Going to look lower from now on. Outstanding photos. Thanks again. E
