I have an x-bolt with a 22 inch barrel that I have started reliading for. So far I can only get 2850 fps working up to max published loads of h4831 and h4350. Accuracy is excellent and I'm not arguing that 2850 fps isn't fast enough to do the job but I have a 7mm-08 that will shoot that fast so I'm not gaining anything with the 280 other than burning more powder. I am using 140 gr accubonds for bullets. I have heard that published load data tends to be conservative for the 280. I was wondering if anyone else has had issues getting 2900 fps with published data? I going to start working over max loads and keep an eye out for pressure signs. Is anyone else able to get 2900 fps with h4831 or h4350 with 140 gr bullets, particularly accubonds?

Only 3000 fps result I got was with Nosler Ballistic Tips and IMR 4350. No other 139/140-grainer beats 2800 fps in my BDL DM.
The reason(s) for published data and the .280 Rem are that it was introduced in non-bolt guns, and, the lawyers have generally pushed more conservative data in newer books.
If you know what you are doing (like many here) this particular envelope can be pushed in a bolt gun. The usual caveat always applies, and I won't insult you with a repetition.
The only hard-and-fast rule for hand loading is that most of the shortcuts can be very dangerous. Have fun and be safe.

Ran into this with IMR4831,which broke 3000 fps with 140's;but accuracy was lousy.IMR 4350 was accurate but slower and in the high 2800's.
The solution seemed to be a move to RL22 which gave the best combination of accuracy with velocities in the 3050 fps range.
This was with my barrel which was a 22" Shilen.
Much of this seems to vary with individual barrels, throating etc....much like what we see now and then from the 7mm RemMag.I have found the two cartridges behave much the same when it comes to delivered velocity, but the theme with the double based slow burners delivering somewhat more velocity seemed to hold true working with a 22" barrel of a M70 FW 280 as well.Velocities of 3050 or so were pretty routine with 140 gr Nosler Partitions, Sierra's and Bitterroots..
I think the cartridge can benefit from the use of powders a tad slower than even H4831 or 4350. With the caveat that I never used H4831 in the cartridge but others report good result with it.
If the OP is getting the same velocity in a 7/08 as with a 280 from the same length barrel the best guess would be that the 7/08 is being loaded hotter than the 280 since the 280 has greater powder capacity.
The 280 Remington is overbore.
The 7 Rem Mag is over bore.

You can try Reloader 19,it seems to be very good for top velocity in the 280. I would use Noslers data with Reloader 19 and work up a load that gives you good accuracy and 3000 fps.
In the past I did the same thing with IMR 4350 using various 140 grain bullets.I had no problem getting 3000 fps from a number of 280s.

I use RL19 in my 26 inch barrel and get from 3000 to 3050 with 140 gr. I had a Ruger 22 inch and 2850 is about all it does. A deer doesn't know they difference between 2850 and 2900.

Another thing to remember is reloading books use 24 and 26 inch barrels for their speeds.

I had no trouble getting 3000 fps with 140 grain bullets in two 280s that had 22 inch barrels.

I know a lot of people have achieved 3000 fps with 140 grain bullets. I was just wondering if they were able to do so without going over max published loads.

The loads that I used were taken directly from a reloading manual. The maximum published load for that powder is now about three grains less.
I am not telling you to do this but I used 57 grains of IMR 4350 in Remington cases with CCI primers.
The maximum published load in the same manual in the most modern edition is 54 grains.
At the time,I considered the load fairly conservative,Fred Huntington of RCBS fame had taken a 280 to Africa with Jack and Eleanor O'Connor. Jack wrote in a reloading guide at the time that Fred used 59 grains of IMR 4350 for a velocity of over 3100 fps, from a 22 inch barreled custom Husqvarna rifle.
Jim Carmichael later owned the same rifle,as far as I know he still has it.

My .280 has no problem getting 3050+ fps with Barnes 140 gr. TSX bullets and IMR 4350.

Interesting that this thread popped up. I've got a 270 and 7-08. I've thought of getting a 280 or 280ai for my next savage build. The published data is interesting when comparing the 270 vs. the standard 280 in the same bullet weight (both are the same cartridge for all intents and purposes). Nosler shows both getting a 140gr to ~3,000fps with a number of powders. Most of those are the same powders. There's about one grain more of the same powder being loaded in the 270. Also note that Nosler has a 24" test barrel for the 270, and a 26" for the 280. By just looking at the data alone I've concluded that it's all but pointless to get the standard 280 with the other rounds that I already have. I might as well get the 280ai or another 7-08 as it will burn less powder which translates into shooting more bullets per dollar! Heck with Nosler's data a 7-08 can shoot to within 60fps of the standard 280, and both with 26" barrels. 60fps isn't much really.

RL19 is your huckleberry. powdr Just looked at Alliants website. RL23 and RL26 show some really good speeds for the 270, 150btsp. It'd be nice if they start publishing some data for other calibers running these two powders.

Exactly why I got a 7mm08 instead of another 280.

My .280 has no problem getting 3050+ fps with Barnes 140 gr. TSX bullets and IMR 4350. Yup and that's because it has the capacity to easily pull it off.. Reading QL and looking at loading manuals is fine to say a case with the capacity in the 40's(with bullets seated) is only 60-70 fps slower than a case that holds 60 gr....until you run into that darned chronograph and the barrel you use shrinks to 22"-24" vs the 26" in the manual;and is looser in the throat and internal dimensions than the pressure barrels used to work up manual data. So you load the smaller case with manual max loads and wonder where all the velocity went? Suddenly the larger case looks better because there's room to improve. Add on top that most home grown loaders are "pressure guessing" almost all of the time....despite what things like QL says. It's of some value of course....in looking at the QL data with R22, I understand why I stopped at 60-61 RL22 with the 140 many years ago for about 3000-3050.That was in the days before there was a QL . OTOH I never had a 22" barreled 7/08 that would break 2850 with a 140 without sweating real hard. This silly magic of smaller cases giving the same velocities as bigger cases exists in fairy tales. Like Santa Claus or the tooth fairy giving you something for nothing.
The 280 Remington is overbore.

This silly magic of smaller cases giving the same velocities as bigger cases exists in fairy tales. Like Santa Claus or the tooth fairy giving you something for nothing. I agree, you can't get the same velocity. However, 60fps in real world applications is nothing. Heck, being more generous with the velocity spread at 80fps (2820-2900), the drop of my 139btsp is only 2.75" more at 80fps less AT 500 yards. My problem is I like speed, but efficiency too...

My 280's snort on H4831SC, IMR7828SSC, IMR4350.
I once tested 5 rifles chambered in 280 Remington on the same range trip with the same load. 3 of them wouldn't break 2700 fps. The other two ran around 2820 fps.

Give a man a fish and he eats for a day. Give a man a welfare check, a forty ounce malt liquor, a crack pipe, an Obama phone, free health insurance. and some Air Jordan's and he votes Democrat for a lifetime.

I have an x-bolt with a 22 inch barrel that I have started reliading for. So far I can only get 2850 fps working up to max published loads of h4831 and h4350.
The .280 case capacity is nearly identical [perhaps 1-2 gr. greater--depending on brand] to the .284 WIN. (Which is, in itself, of the same capacity as the .30-06 case) Try some loads for the .284 and you might find what you are seeking. The .280 was/is downloaded by the factories in [deference to] the autoloaders for which it was initially introduced. Which, by the way, makes no sense at all, because the .270 Win. was also chambered in those same autoloaders at somewhat higher pressure. Still makes no sense at all. Try the .284 load data. WILL
DON'T SWEAT THE SMALL STUFF:......IT'S ALL SMALL STUFF! D@MN; I miss my meds. THE WINDS OF TYRANNY HAVE SHIFTED. BETTER TIMES AHEAD.
