Was wondering if there was somewhere that offered a repro sling for the pre-64s, or if not, where you guys find the closest match. I realize that a 1" sling is a 1" sling and very common but while looking for a couple of them for two of my 70s they seem to be either too cheap looking or FAR nicer than what came with the rifles and weigh a ton. Just curious what some of you go with when putting period correct slings on them. I lucked into one that I think is an original in the discount barrel at a LGS for 6 bucks. John

I always liked the 1" Hunter brand in the military style.
I lucked out Saturday at a gun shop in a town I was passing through. I got three things that I needed for a total of $20.00!
I got a trashed leather sling with Winchester Model 54 hooks on it, an OD green cotton M1903A3/M-1 Garand sling complete, plus a brand new 1" leather adjustable sling with Chicago bolts.
I also have a 1-1/4" M1907 copy sling in very nice shape for my 70's with 1-1/4" Uncle Mike's QD Swivels since I have that cotton sling to put on my 03-A3. That freed up my 1" Hunter for the M54 Hooks and rifle, and those 1" Uncle Mike's QD Swivels went on that new Chicago bolt sling.
You have to love it when things come together!

+1 on Hunter brand slings, I also like Boyt brand. I have never owned a M/70 with what I felt was an original sling. I did own an early M/52 Sporter with an original sling. IIRC the sling was not marked by the manufacturer and one end of the strap was secured by a leather lace rather than a claw type hook.

Mr SBR Mike, I would love to have several of the cotton OD Green M1 slings, I think I bought the last one in an Army,Navy store, I need one for my Carlos, a target 06 in a sporter stock that is my lucky whitetail hammer! The bulky leather slings are just to much of a good thing for me, I had one signed by Carlos ,complete with the white feather and it was just to bulky and stiff for my taste, I sold it to a fellow fire member here. very best WinPoor

I've got Hunter's on 2 of my pre64's. I like them, too. I'm on the hunt for an M14/M1 OD green right now. Called the local Army Navy surplus store near me to check on them. Kid answered the phone and said they "might" have them. Have to get by there next week and check.

"If your army Navy store has any nice OD duck M1, M14 slings please buy a handfull, I will take what you do not need," Good ol' eBay has MANY for $10-12 each Buy-It-Now. One guy has a lot of 10 military issue for $90 BIN. Here's a link if you're interested. http://www.ebay.com/itm/10-M1-Garan..._DefaultDomain_0&hash=item19fe1facd4yooper
