My 1st and favorite centerfire was/is a Sportsman 78 in .270 and one of my favorite features that was different is the smooth bolt knob. ADL's and BDL's where checkered and may still be I don't recall.

78s have a slightly different follower that prevents the bolt from dragging when the gun is empty. That is the main reason that they feel "smoother" than a 700.

Close to 30 years ago Wally world around here closed out the 78's and bout a bunch of them in 270&30-06 for 199 I used the last one a couple years ago to build a 260 on a long action. I have not seen a 78 in a short action , a 243 in one a long action with mag. Block ?

My 78 is a short action and a friend sold it to me because he couldn't bring himself to part out the gun. Mine is a 243 also and the action was going to make a nice custom .260 but I find it impossible to mess with a 1/2-3/4 rifle.

I have seen only one 78 in 223 over the years, I take it they didnt make many in that caliber. I believe one of the members here had a 358 WIN built on a 78 action.

I would have jumped on a 243 and a 308. Sycamore
...Actually Sycamore, you are sort of right....

I probably have a dozen or more Remington's purchased for use as donor actions, but now seem to have lost most of my interest in putting parts guns together.
