I just got in from a long day and a half scouting and humping a water cache. Here are some fish pics from the high Sierra trip last week. I think I have the species pegged but I'm no fiscthyologist so feel free to correct. These are mostly from the higher 11K+ lakes with the brilliant little hybrid coming from the stream by my camp @ about 10K. I also caught a hairy old humpbacked brookie from the same lake, but my memory card was stuffed by then. Nice Rainbow Big Hybrid Gold/Bow from the lake Pure (I think) old Golden Smaller Gold/Bow from the river High country fishing can be hit or miss like anywhere else, but on this trip, it was about as good as it gets. Oh well......."Sierra Slam" minus one (no browns)......... JimF

Very nice trout and pics, thanks for sharing!
Whats your take on the upcoming deer season, are we in for a little weather this year? I am heading up next Friday for a second scouting trip, this time in X12.

My take is that it's freakin' hot out there! I just got back in from the area where I took that bear a few years ago. This time I found a better way in to the area where the deer (seem) to be. Buckets of tracks, good vegetation, but practically no free running water. (hence the water cache) I walked an old (real old) logging trail that is mostly all grown over in places, but it made easier walking and was pretty quiet. I jumped another bear in there this AM. This time it was a sow with a cub and that spooked me bit (no gun).
Evidence says that very few guys get in there, but I could be wrong, and it could be a zoo when the season gets open. The thing that worries me is that once you can figure out how to get in there, it ain't all that hard of a trek. Honestly, I don't have a great feeling about this one unless we get some good wet weather. I'm toying with the idea of a drop camp next year in an area close to where I was backpacking (D-7). It's about 12-miles in and that would just be a starting point. I'm getting less than enthusiastic about packing meat 15 miles in that country.......

Jim, Nice fish! Reminds of the trips I used take up in the Mono Creek Basin, Second and Third Recesses. I'd love to get back up there at least one time before it's too late. Some of the best outdoor memories of my life come from the Sierra High Country.

I'm hunting about 8-10 miles in. My spike camp is about 6mi, then will dayhunt from there. I was up there Sunday, my hunt area is looking great. I won't hunt my D zone until the last week of the season, hopefully the bucks will be staging in this area. The fever is starting to set in! Pray for snow! MtnHtr

I used to love X-12 back before it was a drawing zone. I always thought that going in North cross country from that creek drainage we've talked about would be a good spot to get to but I never tried it.
FWIW: It looked to me like the old Pack station on the highway was out of business. If so, their old pack routes might provide an entry into that country west of the hwy. between say that creek and the next big drainage North.
But you probably know X-12 better than I do so that's just a thought, not really a suggestion.

I have never caught this many big fish before either. It was fast and furious at times. I caught about 40 the first day and about 15 in an hour and a half the second. After that I just gave 'em a rest. Over half the fish were this size and few were under 12"
Of course the stream was the usual small fish but in some ways they were more fun.

ditto on the pics, enjoyed them, don't see those fish here.
Though I've been fortunate to catch some wild rainbows, and dollies that are both beautiful and tasty. Well done JimF
