UP Hunter that would depend on where you are doing your elk hunting. Where I hunt a 300 or a 388 would be in the way a long shot would be a 100 yards. The 35 whelen IMHO is the best for this kind of hunting. When I hunt more open areas where the shots would be more than 200 or so I use my 358 norma mag. Just my $0.2 worth. tom

I hunt elk in the Shoshone mountains in Wyoming and most shots are 200yd or more.
