After completing a full disassembly ( barrel, bolt, trigger assembly etc.) and a light chamber polishing. The reassembly went great. the easiest step of reattaching the forearm leaves a space between it and the receiver? its only about 1/4 in. but I don't like the looks of it. Is that just the way this one is? or is there some way to lessen this space? I had not noticed it before disassembly. But only owned it for a day (blue light special from a local gun shop who didn't want to deal with a "jammer".)$150. its a 6mm rem. and a real shooter now.

there isn't supposed to be that big of a space. The screw on the forend has threading on the end and further up the shank you have to fiddle with it because if you just tighten it as threads into the gas block the threads on the shank pull the forend away from the receiver.
Reposition until pulls the stock into the receiver.

Remington 740,742, 7400 will usually shoot more consistent groups with a gap between the fore arm and the receiver. As was posted, the 742 has a dual pitched fore arm retaining screw that can be used to maintain a small gap. The 740, the earlier version, could be 'fixed' with an aftermarket 'accuracy bloc' made by Williams Gunsights. Really just a spacer to accomplish the same thing.

Thanks guys, for some reason I seem to enjoy bringing these rifles back to their potential. Maybe its the price! A dirty chamber or a bent ear on a magazine and folks are ready to give them away.
