That would be ideal.

Use Roundup first and save yourself headaches later.

Go with raised beds and never till again.

Killing the grass and weeds with chemical first would be ideal but not necessary. Round-up is slow to work. Clip it as close as possible & till it up good.

Kill the grass and weeds first then till, soon all the root clumps will rot and your soil will be better and smoother. I till again in the fall to keep things a little cleaner.

Most grasses will reproduce from the roots or stolons. Tilling it under will chop up the roots and each piece will grow a new plant. Kill it first or suffer the consequences.

After using roundup, it takes about 2 weeks for the plant to start appearing dead. However, it's dead on it's feet. You can rototill it 2 days after spraying and it's still dead.

Whatever you do, mow it close before you till.

Till it under, and weed your garden regularly.

What else have you got to do with your time?

Yep, till it all under in the fall and that will typically kill whatever is hanging around by next spring.

The hard part is getting a good plot started. The easy part is keeping it going.

as long as were at it, I got green beans staggered by two weeks, three sets, tomatoes, carrots, and okra.

Cucumbers and squash going in this weekend. maybe the corn too

Need to make a compost bed for the onions (like the carrots). Our clay soil doesn't work well with tubers and subsurface goodies.

I never used chemicals. I used a pitch fork to turn up the ground and planted from there. Didn't have much issue with grass or weeds. Were talking roughly 20 yards by 10 yards for the garden I did.

I put cucumbers, tomato, squash, zucchini and peppers all in 2 days ago.

I should do some beans next year. Asparagus has been coming in steady for the past 2-3 weeks but that's about to peter out.

Roundup is fully translocated after 72 hours. Buy generic glyphosate if you have a choice, look for 41% concentration.

Potatoes just now coming up. Planted tomatoes, yellow squash, zucchini, eggplant ant cucumbers last Saturday. It's been dry here for a change, so I've had to water the new plants. Love fresh veggies. It's worth the effort.
