Last weekend I was returning from a Mt. Evans mushroom hunt and on the big meadow, right outside of Bergen Park, south of hwy 103 near the pond, saw a large herd of elk. We stopped and watched the cows and the spikes when my wife noticed in the shadow of the barn the bull that made the barn look small. I swear I have never seen a bigger bull! A 6x6, his body was absolutely massive, looking like a huge steer almost.
We watched them for a while along with 20 other cars that stopped, and then a Dodge Ram and a Tacoma pulled up in front of us. Some guys exited and watched, and then I heard "I can take him!" So I looked at them and saw... a fellow pull out a rifle, stand on the side of the road, lay it across the bed of the Ram and aim at the elk! I was speechless, I could not believe he was going to shoot! It is August, private land, dozens of people watching, off the side of the road. The guy caught me looking at him and scrambled into the cab of the Ram with his rifle. Soon after, the barrel stuck out of the passenger side window. He did not fire and a few minutes later both trucks left.
I am not sure what it was. A prank? Did he use the scope to glass the elk?
Regardless, looked very bad to me. In the eyes of all the onlookers, makes hunters look like morons that aim at anything, anytime, anywhere.

I know the spot well.

Not to say you did anything wrong, but I'd of written down his license and description and been on the phone to the DOW/Sheriff right there, on the spot.

I'll have to get up and see that dude!

Yep!!

You can bet your last box of cartridges those guys will come back at night and jacklight that elk, if he's still around. <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/mad.gif" alt="" />

I wasn't there, so can't say for sure but I bet the guy was just a local trying to freak out the "tourists" stopped to gawk at the elk. Not saying I condone it, but I can't believe he had any intentions of shooting that elk.

MS - I hear you, the thought occurred to me. I couldn't see his plate well and coming closer didn't look like a good idea, and I don't know the DOW numbers for the area, either. I thought of snapping a digital photo of them and would have if he fired the shot. This is one of those things I was totally unprepared for. I was sure he won't fire but then again, you see a guy pointing a rifle and naturally think - why would he do it unless he wants to shoot? - so the worry was there that he will fire. I sure am glad he didn't because there would have been a world's end right there with all the tourists. I am sure 911 would be called and UN contacted on the spot...

Sadly, there are people who WOULD shoot under those circumstances.

I'd have been on the phone to 911 as well, and driving by to get the license number and a good look at the people in the truck would have been a priority.
