It's called "uptalk" - it started with teenage girls a generation ago, somehow became accepted in some corners of urban Canada. But Canada is a pretty big place, with quite a few different regional cultures, just like the USA. So uptalk is not universal. OK? ;-)

Same here, but they do indeed end every sentence with a lilting upturn in their voice...the way normal people end a question.

They are comical people though.

Really? I guess maybe to Americans we are, but I guided for a bunch of Americans a couple years in deer camp, and I about died laughing most evenings. Some of the funniest guys I've met, was some good times.

yeah its not universal that's for sure but its something I hear too. IME these uptalkers are generally 30 somethings and younger and agreed, from a city.

I think that's what the Indians said in 1492..

That didn't work out so good for them...

Lived in Canada all my life, 53 years, and never, ever, heard the term. Looked it up, apparently it was a term introduced in 1993. Me personally, I will stick with speaking Canadian Eh, no matter who or what wants to label it otherwise.

According to http://grammar.about.com/od/tz/g/uptalkterm.htm

Uptalk

Definition:

A speech pattern in which phrases and sentences habitually end with a rising sound, as if the statement were a question. Also known as upspeak or high-rising terminal (HRT).

The term uptalk was introduced by journalist James Gorman in an "On Language" column in The New York Times, Aug. 15, 1993. But as mentioned below, the speech pattern itself was first recognized in the U.S. at least two decades earlier.

I was going to ask the OP if he has ever watched TV or heard a woman under the age of 55 speak out loud? It seems they all do it, no matter where you live in the U.S.

Drives me crazy...makes me glad I am married to a German lady!

Eh?

I always wondered if their Acadian heritage was what caused Cajuns to end a sentence very often with "Huh?"

Just in case, I love Louisiana, and Cajuns!

Truly enjoyed my time living up there. Not sure about the east but the boys in the west sure liked their ketchup and cheese whiz. One of my favorites. grin

A fellow PoCo boy! Who woulda thunk it, cheers!

As far as the weird talking that was mentioned, I attribute it to the libtards you usually see on our news and stuff but I can guarantee that most of us regular types definitely don't talk that way 'eh.

So for them I do NOT apologize.

I'm surprised that the way Canucks say "about" has not come up yet...
