Wicked crack in the case. Any knowledge on the provenance of this cartridge? COO? Rifle makers, etc?
Its not actually a crack just a real bad crease. The guy I got it from said he found it near a old mining site. The head stamp was produced by Winchester for Spencer Arms from 1878 to 1911. And I believe that all ammo production for this round ceased around WWI. Most loads ran a 350-60 gr. bullet at about 1200 FPS from a rifle/carbine length barrel. the cartridge was designed for the Spencer rifle and carbine and patented March 1860 and saw use in the civil war. it was also used in the Ballard and Joslyn carbines.
Sorry what does COO mean?
